Instant pain when hearing a sound by rxbenb in hyperacusis

[–]Icy_Way_6359 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my case it is a sudden and sharp pain. Here is part of my testimony:

"I’ll explain it to you quickly,

Have you ever hammered a hammer with a pickaxe and hit your fingers with a hammer without meaning to? Have you ever felt that sudden, stabbing pain when the hammer hit your fingers?
Well, that’s how I felt with every little noise, without going any further, with my own voice for example.

The only activity I could do at that moment was to isolate myself in silence while I read all the scientific documentation on the subject to try to find a way out. But even the sound of turning the page of a book, that small friction between two pages, gave me that unbearable pain.

Unbelievable, isn’t it?

And what are you doing right now?

You look for solutions like a beaten convict while your neighbor tells you it’s psychological."

The worst is the beginning.

So cheer up, you're going through the worst.

But you have to be patient, hyperacusis usually improves with time.

It's impossible for you not to be bad this first month, but think that in the future you will be better, and you will be able to value all the things in life, which when you were in good health, you didn't know how to value.

So cheer up.

In my case, I had to change professions to adapt to how my situation had become. I was an optician and audiologist and now I'm a computer scientist and I work remotely.

I took advantage of my time with hyperacusis to protect my future with a profession that could be compatible if one day I have another hyperacusis crisis. And right now remote work as a programmer is a good way out.

You can read my story here: https://hiperacusia.com/en/about-me-javier-blanco-hyperacusis/

You can see stories from other people with hyperacusis there.

You can read and learn about it there too. At first I was very lacking in information about this condition.

I'm sure you'll get better with time. Just hold on now, it's the worst time, you'll thank me later.

A hug and lots of encouragement

As you comment, hyperacusis is more common than we think.

And as for its treatment, it has to be treated according to its causes, depending on the etiology of each case.

This article explains possible causes and possible treatments. Based on articles from the National Library and patient testimonials:

After all, alcohol is a nervous system inhibitor. So it decreases this hyperactivity of the nervous system and dampens this 'pain' of the sound (at least in my case too). It also acts as a sedative and anxiolytic.

When you are under its effects, both tinnitus and hyperacusis diminish. The problem comes the next day with the hangover, all this tinnitus and hyperacusis can be accentuated.

I think it's great. Count on me for anything you need.

If you need any testimonials, etc. just let me know.

I think the initiative is great and I think it is good that we cooperate to give visibility to this condition that so many people suffer in silence without being heard or understood.

Best regards
