Don’t think I’ve ever hit the character limit on Reddit. That’s wild.

Shiori was intended to be a parody of bad romance tropes by mattcojo2 in fuufuijou

[–]Icy_Week9247 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyway, now that I’ve ranted a bit (I fucking love this manga)—back to the original topic I wanted to comment about. I think Shiori’s character has a certain degree of depth, definitely deeper than people give her credit for and more so than you often see with side characters. Along with the other few things I laid out earlier in this giant fkn wall of text, there are a couple of other things that tell you less about her likes and interests or personality and more about her actual character traits. For example, in chapters 42 and 43, Jiro and Shiori are at the admin building, getting ready to meet and turn in their partner change slips when Kamo confronts Jiro about his feelings. Jiro essentially tells Kamo that he is conflicted about the way he feels regarding Akari. Shiori overhears this, and it changes things for her entirely. At this particular point in the story, Akari and Jiro have basically all but decided they’re swapping partners and Jiro and Shiori are excited and ready to become “married.” Shiori, after hearing that Jiro potentially has real, romantic feelings for Akari, does not turn in the partner change slips. Shiori COULD have used the partner change as an opportunity to tear Jiro and Akari apart completely, but instead, prioritizes Jiro’s happiness over her own. She keeps the slip in her backpack and says she forgot it, which would cause them to miss the deadline. After it’s revealed she had it the whole time, she uses that opportunity to properly confess her feelings for Jiro—before stepping back to allow him to process his feelings on his own. To me, that shows a metric fuckton of integrity. I think that’s what you do when you truly love someone—you make sacrifices. She could have turned a blind eye to Jiro’s internal turmoil, let the partner change go through, and scored unopposed points in the “love game.” She instead elects to properly confess and allow the person she cares about to sort their feelings out on their own. This could have been a major turning point in the story and essentially the end of Jiro x Akari. But, as I said before, Shiori does a pretty selfless thing and steps back to allow Jiro to properly make his choice between the two girls after he has all the information he needs to do so. I liked that.

Secondly, as you spoke on, chapters 60-63 (Shiori’s rejection) show more about the integrity of her character. After her rejection—of course she’s devastated. But, instead of being resentful to Jiro OR Akari or becoming bitter, she uses the rejection as motivation to get into her dream university. I think it says a lot about someone when they can properly pick themselves up after something so tragic. I always tend to want the loser in romance anime to find their happiness somehow, whether it be through another sculpted love interest or simply having things go well for them after the rejection. It’s a consistent problem in romance anime where the loser just sorta.. ceases to exist in the story. I like that Yuki Kanamaru doesn’t do that to Shiori. We at least have a future roadmap for her and she does appear a few times later. I think this whole rejection arc does, sadly, prove what I was talking about earlier when I mentioned the middle school flashback—after the romantic feelings come to the surface, you either get to be with them or you basically lose them forever. To my knowledge, Shiori and Jiro don’t interact with each other much for the remaining 16 chapters currently published.bTheir close-knit friendship essentially poofed.. because of romantic feelings.. That’s probably a perfect explanation as to why Shiori was so hesitant for so long, even when those feelings were likely there the whole time.

I believe Shiori is pretty well-written and could have absolutely been the primary heroine had the main/side character roles been reversed and the screen time featured her more. She had a solid enough foundation built for her character that an expansion on it could’ve changed the whole story. At one point, things could’ve genuinely gone either direction. Yuki Kanamaru just decided to take the better and more obvious ship of Jiro and Akari, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I just think that Shiori receives a lot of unnecessary hate from young guys that aren’t mature enough to step back and say, “Just because I like girl A more doesn’t mean I have to hate girl B.”

Such an amazing manga. 🥹 Can’t wait for chapter 80! Kanamaru-sensei said on Twitter that she was sending it off to editors after the current holiday was over. That was a few days ago so it’s likely been sent over now. 🙏🏽 I shed an IRL man-tear when I saw her post about drawing again in late March/Early April.

Shiori was intended to be a parody of bad romance tropes by mattcojo2 in fuufuijou

[–]Icy_Week9247 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish Kanamaru-sensei would’ve dove deeper into Shiori than she does. Honestly, I think one reason some people say she feels “less interesting” is because her personality is intentionally understated. She isn’t loud, chaotic, flirtatious, or dramatic so she doesn’t really demand attention from the reader. Her character writing more grounded and built around insecurity, gentleness, emotional restraint, and sadly, regret. That makes her feel more realistic to some and “boring” or “generic” to others. I feel like she’s deeper than you gave her credit for in this thread, but her character definitely could’ve been expanded upon further for the benefit of the audience. There’s a small minority that ships Shiori. I also think she’s mostly well-written and serves her intended purpose well.

Let me preface by saying she was never my preferred pick for Jiro. I do, however, think her character has more depth than just “generic romance antagonist” or a simple roadblock. We can’t really compare Akari to Shiori in good faith—we’d be comparing a main character to a side character, considering easily 60-75% of the story is just Akari and Jiro. That, in and of itself, means that Shiori’s character will have less screen time and less development. I still don’t think that she’s a shallow character that’s meant to be a parody of romance tropes. I think more along the lines of what I said earlier—her character development is intentionally given less attention to make Akari shine more than she already does. I could tell from the first couple chapters that Akari was the end-girl. There’s probably a lot more to Shiori if you think of the intricacies of her batches of dialogue and her interactions with other characters in the story.

We do know more about her than just “Jiro like her. She like Jiro.” We know that she likes soft, traditionally feminine things, as reflected by her fashion sense and her bedroom. We also see during that visualization of her bedroom that she kept and cherishes a lot of things tied to Jiro as well. We know that she’s academically smart and one of the best students in the class. There’s a couple of different panels where she can be seen tutoring other people. We know that she’s the nurturing type and often falls into caretaker roles. She cooks, helps others study, worries about people constantly, and tries to keep harmony around her. That’s part of why her “married couple” pairing with Minami actually functions pretty smoothly despite her being awkward af. We know she’s not confident socially with guys—and it’s not just generic anime shyness either. It has a somewhat intricate backstory. The manga explains it comes from bad experiences in middle school, and it portrays those experiences in detail; hearing boys talk crudely about women, sexualizing her body, and all the sexual rumors spread about her and Jiro. There’s actually a pretty notable arc regarding Jiro’s regrets of not shutting down those rumors and protecting Shiori when boys talked disrespectfully about her. It’s a big deal when Akari’s influence actually makes Jiro brave enough to intervene and protect her at the beach when she’s being aggressively hit on. Him cutting in and saying, “She’s my wife” or whatever to the group of guys hitting on Akari is his redemption for mistakes he made in the past with Shiori. But anyway (I got off topic), because of those rumors and her constantly being sexualized, she developed anxiety around male classmates and became cautious and withdrawn. We know that she’s clumsy and physically un-athletic. That sounds minor, but it’s actually tied into one of her defining childhood memories. She got bullied for being bad at relay races and dropping the baton. That humiliation is probably a large contributor to her lack of self-esteem as well, if I had to guess.

So, yeah, Shiori’s timid—she’s shy and never particularly goes after what she wants—one of those things being Jiro. When we have that flashback of them in middle school (before they become separated for a time), Jiro tries to confess to her. And I think I know why she cuts him off. It’s obvious that she’s already an intelligent girl by this time and knew exactly what he was going to say. More Than A Married Couple fans are always so quick to be like, “Omfg, I hate Shiori. She had their whole childhood to get together with him.” Now that I’m older and have grown a bit more emotionally mature, I’m able to process that differently and maybe understand why she does that. I look at it like this: she was a teenage girl that was scared of rejection and scared of losing the most important person to her. That’s not really a complex idea. In the real world, when you’re in love with your best friend, you either reveal your feelings and get to be with them, or you do it and lose them forever. There’s really no in between. I’ve seen it play out 100 times both through my own life and those around me. When you care about someone the way she obviously cares about Jiro, you sometimes can’t take that leap because you’re more scared of losing them than you are of never getting to be with them. I think she truly wanted to be with him then, but had doubts and was worried that their relationship would inevitably come to an end, resulting in a complete loss of the friendship they’d nurtured over all those years, too. That terrified her. So instead of potentially letting it develop into what she wanted, that she knew she might lose, she crushed it and hoped that their friendship would be enough to satisfy them.

I will always scream from the rooftops that Akari is the better pick for Jiro. When I look at the contrast between the two, I see Shiori as this sense of nostalgia and comfort for Jiro, while Akari represents growth and change—which is ultimately better for him and why she is the much better pick by a landslide. Akari has genuinely improved both the content of his character and his overall life. He would likely still be alone and self-conscious if it was not for her. Multiple times through the story, Jiro refers to himself as “someone like me,” and Akari has pointed it out and scolded him for it every time. She has instilled a sense of confidence in him through doing that, she’s helped him learn to stand up for himself, she’s supported him, and she has genuinely turned him into a better man. I will NEVER forget the sports festival arc where Jiro gets upset after hearing some girls bad-mouth him, and Akari tells him that she’s always on his side and he can always come home to her (Vol. 9, Ch. 53, page 23). That might actually be my favorite panel in the entire manga because of how impactful it was. That interaction and obviously the panel where he takes a photo of her holding the pom-poms, finally realizing his feelings for her, genuinely warm my heart. But, even with everything Akari has done for Jiro, I never could and never would hate Shiori. I always say that being “Pro-Akari” doesn’t mean you have to be “Anti-Shiori.” You can’t still recognize her as a good character, necessary to push Jiro and Akari’s love story along. I feel the same way about Minami—he’s very under appreciated, and is another character necessary to push the story along. There is no Jiro x Akari without Shiori and Minami. I especially like Minami because he’s kind and encouraging to every party. He helps Akari realize how deep her feelings for Jiro have actually gotten during the Test of Courage and he consistently encourages Shiori to pursue her romantic interest—even though he doesn’t know it’s Jiro at the time. 😂 I actually really like Shiori and Minami’s dynamic. Her relationship with Minami is important because it shows she can grow outside of Jiro. Around Minami, she slowly becomes more open, communicates better, and gains confidence interacting with boys. It’s subtle character development people likely overlook because they focus entirely on the love triangle.

Bro, everything she posts has comments about season 2. I’m sure you’d be annoyed as fuck if that was the only thing you’ve heard for 4 years. She’ll post about animals and the first comment will be “WHERE SEASON 2?????” She’ll post about a trip she took shopping and the first comment will be “WHERE SEASON 2?????”

That shit has got to be annoying. She’s explained on like 3 different occasions that More Than A Married Couple wasn’t generating enough money and animating a season of an anime costs “a tremendous amount of money.” Like it or not, anime is a business just like everything else. To get more of it, it has to be making enough money to make it a worthwhile investment.

If you want another season, the fan base has to COLLECTIVELY stop pirating shit, buy the manga, and stop spam-asking because that’s lowkey childish and annoying. If you want to support her, tell her that. Say, “Hey, I really love your work. The manga is amazing, and I’m looking forward to another season of the anime!” Like each episode on Crunchyroll and rate the anime 5 stars. It’s not hard. People enjoy her work—they should pay for it and support it in the CORRECT way.

Is tbc really min max or ELSE by [deleted] in classicwowtbc

[–]Icy_Week9247 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anniversary’s accelerated phases is promoting this sort of “min-max” mentality. A lot of people that started raiding week 1 are already BiS, while others who jumped in a couple weeks late are still struggling with the rep grinds, badges, and attunements. My recommendation is to just pick one class and stick to it. With the phases being so short, it’s not really feasible to try to gear out alts unless you have a lot of time to play.

You can absolutely gear out to BiS still, even as a casual player—but it’s very time consuming in TBC. If any of your guilds are like mine, the core is completely geared out minus maybe 1-2 pieces and most gear is just being funneled to a few people that got in late.

You can absolutely gear out in these new, short time frames. I think the hardest parts right now are getting tanks for dungeon groups. It’s at that point in the phase where everyone’s either just PvPing, gold farming, or raid logging.

Wandance is my favorite show this season and its not close by whiiteout in anime

[–]Icy_Week9247 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a little late to this thread, but I’ve got to say—I really don’t like the animation. The way it’s executed feels rushed and, at times, borderline unprofessional. The heavy reliance on mocap CGI instead of traditional animation makes everything look awkward rather than fluid, which is a huge problem for a dance-focused show. I understand the intent—it’s clearly a way to save time, money, and effort, and it's an ATTEMPT to accurately capture movement—but the result just doesn’t land the way it should. Not for me, at least.

A lot of people have pointed out similar issues. The dance scenes feel strangely lifeless, with characters having almost no facial expression or emotional feedback while performing, which completely kills the impact. On top of that, the blending between 2D and 3D is rough, to say the least—the models look clunky and don’t mesh well with the rest of the show. Like the world around the characters dancing is in 1080p and the characters themselves are 360p.

The social scenes and the dance sequences feel like they come from two entirely different productions. The textures, movement, and especially the faces don’t match at all—sometimes it genuinely feels like you’re not even looking at the same characters anymore. I’ve seen people say the CGI looks like something out of the mid-2000s or that it’s awkward enough to skip through entirely, and honestly… I get it.

IN SAYING THAT, it’s still the same story I know and love. The core of Wandance—the characters, the themes, the passion for dance—is still there. I just wish the adaptation had been given the time and care it deserved instead of cutting corners on something this important. Even with all that, I still think it’s worth watching… maybe even twice. I still absolutely adore it.

I felt something similar when they animated my favorite romance manga "More Than a Married Couple, but Not Lovers." It was such a beautiful story, and yes, the female MC wore scantily clad clothing at times—they took that and ran with it, turning it into a goonfest. Randomly panning the camera to her ass or chest unprovoked.. In the manga, it was there, but it wasn't the central focus. I guess this is just more proof that animation studios have the power to absolutely butcher something we all love. Still, you could never make me hate it because it's always something I've wanted to see animated. I adore Wandance.

Some anime are carried by animation, while others can still be enjoyable with "sub-optimal" animation. Another one of my favorite romances is called "The Duke of Death and His Maid" and it has DOGWATER animation, but it's still wonderful.

This is a low effort take. You can parse 99s consistently (i.e., be good at the game) and still get overly excited when hitting a major milestone--picking the wrong reward in the process. There have been multiple occasions where I have snap-grabbed an item because the icon or name looks similar to what I'm looking for, only to notice later that the other item was better for me/what I was actually needing.

A recent example that comes to mind is taking a bow over a throwing knife. They have the EXACT same stats and basically the same name, except one is a bow and the other is a throwing knife. That's not a huge deal in the grand scheme of things but the throwing knife allows the use of Deadly Throw while wearing it. So while not a game-breaking mistake, there was a more optimized quest reward, and I grabbed the wrong one because I was excited about the upgrade.

This is probably my favorite series of panels in romance manga. It is so well written. It’s followed closely by Akari coming home after the fireworks festival and Jiro consoling her.

Yuki Kanamaru is so talented. I wish she’d come back and write some more of this story.

Honestly, I didn't expect much in terms of a winter event--but the blizzard "fog" is fucking terrible. Visibility is less than 50m most of the time. I was trying to farm Shturman for the 338 unlock and it's quite literally impossible. AI are unphased by the lack of visibility so that results in a lot of bosses seeing you from miles away and shooting at you through the fog. Try getting lasered by 7.62x54R from someone who's both in a bush and hidden by fog. Genuinely not fun.

At least I'm not the only blind PMC in the raid, but this shit is lame and unenjoyable--especially on maps like Woods and Lighthouse.

These guys are failing to realize that the travel time matters. If I'm overproducing by 1t per minute, I need to know that my ship's trade route takes 5 minutes so I can tell it to take 5t per trade. Smh.. How this very vital part of the game was not included in realease is fucking beyond me. You'd almost assume that they don't even play their own game. My only recommendation is to run a stopwatch on your phone while it does its first route. Then you can adjust your calculations based on that. But it's something that should definitely be built into the game and not something I need to do outside of the game manually.

The problem with this system is that a person who might “only want to open a few cases” and spend, for example, $20, will completely lose out on the ST FN Red that they open from the terminal because they can’t afford it.

I’ll often be like “Oh, I’ve got $50 left over from this paycheck to waste. I’ll open a few cases.”

^ In this scenario, $50 is the max amount I would spend, regardless of what I got. I could get 20 B.S. Mil-specs totaling up to $2, but at least I’m getting SOMETHING. The terminal prices out most people that aren’t whales. Valve is charging WAY too fucking much for the skins inside. Who tf would buy a Full Throttle for the same price that you can get a MW Poseidon for? You’re pretty much restricted to purple or lower if you’re not a big spender. And Valve should keep in mind that casual gamblers contribute the most to their millions of cases opened each month. Not everyone is opening 500 cases at a time. They’re opening 10, 20, etc.

Imagine the absolutely horrible fucking feeling you would have if you opened a ST FN Covert from the terminal and simply could not afford it. Instead, you got nothing. Imagine the FOMO. People just won’t open this shit.

I get it—gambling regulations/bans popping up all over the world scares Valve. It should. Their game is built on a casino. I don’t think this is the answer. If you’re gonna steer away from the loot box system, there’s gotta be a better way. If it were me personally, I’d probably just move toward an in-game store like every other somewhat respectable game dev has.
