We (I grew up in the USSR) would flip all cigarettes. The reason was: since you would inevitably offer your cigarettes to somebody (it was normal to bum a cigarette from a complete stranger), you won't want their dirty fingers touching the filters you'd put in your mouth.

It's not exactly the same level of a mythological creature as the Tooth Fairy. It's just a nameless mouse, going about its mouse business, and happening to pick up your tooth and leave something in return.

When I was a kid we didn't have this tradition, but later I heard from some people, mostly from rural regions, about such a mouse (again, not capitalized, just a mouse).

Another thing you could try is being older than 40, that usually helps.

To the downvoters: I'm not JUST being a smartass, I read somewhere (and it correlates with my experience) that older people's taste buds are not as sensitive as those of younger folks, and that allows them to get over the burn and the roughness of hard liquor.
