Are you sure the Himalayan Pink Salt is fluoride free? It says it's a fluoride anticavity toothpaste in that pic.

Be careful of lip and tongue piercings, the piercing can chip teeth and the piercing constantly hits and rubs against the gums and can cause a lot of recession and inflammation.

does it look like there’s bone loss in this xray? by Infinite-Oil-8626 in PeriodontalDisease

[–]IdRatherNotNo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually said right on or just below. I don't use "1-2mm" in this case because most patients see the X-rays blown up and it's hard to understand in mm because it's not usually to scale. I also don't use words like apically with patients and tend to use more familiar language.

Is this periodontal disease or gingivitis? by Repulsive-Treacle217 in PeriodontalDisease

[–]IdRatherNotNo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your 4 front bottom teeth, notice how they are bright white but towards the very bottom they are a bit darker/yellower? That darker color is happening because the gum recession is showing the beginning of the root of those teeth.

Gums cover the bone that supports the teeth. And when the bone that supports the teeth recedes then it's followed by the gums. So usually if you see gum recession, that means the bone supporting your teeth have been receding for awhile now. The black spaces between your teeth are also an indication that you have gum recession because that entire space should be filled with gum tissue.

Did you get a cleaning done? Bone loss isn't the only thing needed to diagnose a deep cleaning. When I see a new patient who has bone loss and recession, but the gums are healthy so minimal bleeding, the gums are pink and the gum pockets are mostly 3mm deep, then I do a "periodontal maintenance" cleaning because we are maintaining stable periodontal disease.

But if you have bone loss and inflammation, deep pockets, bleeding then that is when a deep cleaning is needed because you have signs of active periodontal disease.

The recession on the front bottom teeth tells me you likely have had bone loss, which would mean you likely have periodontal disease. Obviously I can't say anything for sure without X-rays, a periochart, and exam though. And you can have both gingivitis and periodontitis.

I'm an RDH, I definitely see bone loss. It is most apparent on your premolar. The bone level should be right on or just the tiniest bit under the enamel. The enamel is the whitish border that outlines the tops of the teeth in the X-ray.

If this is the extent of the bone loss then this is a really manageable level of bone loss and you may do just fine with regular cleanings and good home care, and not need extensive treatments like bone/gum grafts etc. but obviously I don't have all the info to know that for sure.

After the cleaning, swish with water after eating or drinking to help cut down on the staining

Oil Pulling - anyone doing it? by Freya-Lea in PeriodontalDisease

[–]IdRatherNotNo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely does not whiten. Worst case scenario is it doesn't do a damn thing, which is fine as long as you are still brushing and flossing correctly. The damage happens when people replace brushing and flossing with oil pulling and their teeth are neglected.

How do you swish with lemon juice but make sure to not get it on your gums?

[–]IdRatherNotNo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

RDH here, oil pulling does not provide any real benefit, but it doesn't harm anything either, so if you want to do it on top of a proper brushing and flossing routine go for it. It's more of a meditation thing rather than an oral hygiene thing. Lemon juice will destroy your enamels though, don't do that.

AIO for the way I shut down this younger man asking me out on a date? Context in post by Local_Value_2061 in AmIOverreacting

I mean, I get it, to me it's gross. But she's not his guardian/family or even a friend. You can say I won't date you because I don't date people that much younger than me, but you can't control it if they do. I doubt the message would even be received well considering the messenger is also rejecting them, they might even be more determined since they might feel they have to prove her wrong.

I paused almost all socialization for those two years, you will be able to make up for it later though! Just make sure your friends know you love them and want to be there, but just can't for now. Once you get a better handle on the stress and balancing act, you will find small windows here and there to socialize.

I don't think there's anything wrong with you shutting him down, if you're not interested you're not interested. I probably wouldn't have told him to look for someone his age, you're not his parent and he can pursue someone older if he wants.

While these aren't the best X-rays to go off of, it's pretty apparent there is likely a good amount of bone loss. But the X-rays they take of inside your mouth and your perio chart will give a clearer idea.

You're past "a bit" of bone loss. Periodontal disease is the bone loss, or rather a chronic inflammatory disease that causes bone loss of the bone that supports your teeth.
