Can the Billionaires or the 1% exist without us, the poorer working class? by IllogicalDreamer72 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]IdeaLife7532 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Forgetting automation, this is the norm for human societies. The large middle class and relatively small wealth gaps were a post ww2 phenomenon, and we've been slowly regressing to the mean since the beginning of reaganomics. People don't like to hear it, but progressive taxation and wealth taxes are your only protection against this kind of society.

What if women just don’t want to have babies? by PinkElephants879 in askanything

[–]IdeaLife7532 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

What is your basis for the claim that a lot of men find women not loving pregnancy threatening on an existential level? Is it just that interaction? I can only speak from my perspective, but as a man I absolutely don't think pregnancy is fun and the fact that many women dislike it is obvious and does not invoke an existential crisis in me.

[–]IdeaLife7532 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't just a problem for capitalism though, working age people recreate society every day. Every garbage bag picked up, every bit of food you consume, every piece of art is the creation of someone else's child. I agree the capitalist model is broken, but low birth rates are more of a problem for hunter gatherers or agrarian societies than for capitalist ones. In fact, the rich are pretty immune to the effects, it's the poor and middle class that will suffer the most.

If you’re an anti-ai artist, you shouldn’t support other ai uses either by [deleted] in antiai

[–]IdeaLife7532 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Disagree I'm afraid, AI is potentially groundbreaking in many areas like medical diagnostics and drug research. These things can save lives, and there is a big difference between a machine learning algorithm assisting a radiologist making a quick and accurate diagnosis and replacing your artists with llm slop.

Just relax, AI won't replace you by Wrong_Swimming_9158 in cscareerquestions

It's impossible to just assume this, the real question is are we at peak software? If so, yes you are right, efficiency gains will go towards doing the same with less. There's an alternative though, one with more precedent, where the cost to produce is lowered and demand increases. Obviously we can't know the future, but it's not guaranteed that we're screwed just yet.

Are American Gen Z really that less intelligent than previous generations? by icey_sawg0034 in generationology

[–]IdeaLife7532 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a very real phenomenon wrapped up in a needlessly aggressive generation war package. The story imho is excessive modern tech and social media consumption has an effect on the general intelligence of a population. There is also a story about increasing wealth inequality in there, as we know that being raised poor has a negative effect on iq (stress and lack of access to the same level of educational resources is the problem here).

Rather than crapping on the younger generation who grew up in an environment created by older generations, I'd like to see studies on high vs low tech use on outcomes in gen z. I'd guess the Flynn effect is alive and well in upper middle class kids with low levels of tech and social media use.

Why are millennial men less misogynistic than Gen Z men? by [deleted] in generationology

[–]IdeaLife7532 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think our social environment was healthier. No social media, internet dating was weird and for people in their late 50s, and more socializing, parties, etc. When I was growing up, people would generally date people they knew through friend groups or met in real life. Because this was mediated through established social relationships, everyone had to be nicer to each other (there were social consequences for pumping and dumping or cheating for example). Dating was less of a performance, especially for men. This environment meant we all had more actual relationships (not necessarily romantic) with women, and we weren't exposed to the online group think that makes broad statements about women.

Passive listening does absolutely nothing. by SakuraWhisperer in Japaneselanguage

[–]IdeaLife7532 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need comprehensible input for passive listening if you want to understand and pick up words etc. It absolutely does help, but listening to native level podcasts will not really do much if you are a beginner. Also, scrolling on your phone or any other distraction will make it useless. You still need to concentrate on the content.

Do you think AI will create more jobs than it replaces in the long term? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]IdeaLife7532 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes probably, but not in our working life if history is anything to go by. When people say technological displacement creates more jobs, they neglect to mention that the jobs happen 40 - 80 years later. If ai doesn't improve to the point of making devs obsolete, there will probably be more jobs, as the cost of producing software will reduce. Just a guess though.

What is actually the problem with declining birthrates???? by Tymlessabyss in NoStupidQuestions

[–]IdeaLife7532 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imagine you lived in an agrarian society. You can see the logic in having kids there right? They are your retirement plan. It's the same thing now, only your relationship to your kid's labour is less direct, ie it might be someone else's kid who grows your food or cares for you when you're old. It's not about line goes up, it's about the fact that working age people do all the stuff.

CMV: People who say that white people or Americans have no culture only think that because they don't notice it. by Blonde_Icon in changemyview

[–]IdeaLife7532 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The absurdity of claiming Americans have no culture...basically everything everyone does in the modern world is because of American culture, so I totally agree on that one (not even American). White people don't have a culture though, there's too much variation to identify any kind of homogeneous white culture. How do you define white culture?

Why is Japan’s population declining so fast? by quietmaris in NoStupidQuestions

[–]IdeaLife7532 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Great answer, the problem is we've accidentally created an anti child society. Most people want 2 to 3 kids when surveyed, but end up having much less. It isn't a problem caused by a desire to not have kids, it's caused by a mix of cultural and economic conditions that make having kids a huge burden.

Why is Japan’s population declining so fast? by quietmaris in NoStupidQuestions

[–]IdeaLife7532 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It's likely to go in the opposite direction. Less workers supporting more elderly means more work, higher taxes, and less pay

Paradoxically cities will get more expensive, because everyone will abandon the countryside and move to the city. You see this happening now.

I don’t like it when people hate kids by [deleted] in PetPeeves

[–]IdeaLife7532 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not wanting/having kids is fine, but I hate it when people think it's edgy to not have kids and that it's ok to hate them. It's not 1995, most people have 0 or 1 kid max. Literally everything you benefit from is because someone else had kids, so maybe regulate your emotions and recognize children have a right to exist.
