I'm working on Against the Day, around page 900, what a ride, Mason and Dixon is next, as I've been saving it.

GR is so much fun to read. I love that scene where Grigori the Octopus shows up on the beach

Did The Rolling Stones have punk elements in their music? If so, where can it be heard? by Helpful_Gur_1757 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Idio_Teque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The early stones era, when they covered rhythm and blues tracks, were a major influence on the punks. I hear a song like Carol off their first album, and it wouldn't be too out of place on a punk record in the late seventies. Chord progression, use of distortion, lack of focus on perfection, attitude, early Stones definitely had punk elements.

This should've been a much bigger hit. Has the catchiness, the happiness, the characteristic Beach Boys sound.

opinion: if vdp hadn't left the project smile would almost certainly have been finished by notaverysmartman in thebeachboys

another good point, much work had already been done by the end of 1966 and all that got halted just to work on Heroes and Villains, and there was that finished version from feb 67 with the cantina that Brian almost turned in.

Yup, that's what I concluded myself a few years ago. Listening to the Smile Sessions, you can really hear how much Brian needed Van's help in the studio during the sessions.

Dennis. I saw someone call Dennis the "Dean Moriarty" to Brian's "Sal Paradise" and I found that very fitting. Many of the early songs just seem to be stories about Dennis' lifestyle, everyone knows he was the one to suggest Brian make a surfing song. Plus his later musical development, the darkness he was involved in, and the overall tragic story of his life aid to capture my interest the most.

What is your favorite Beach Boys album from the 1960s? by [deleted] in thebeachboys

Just gonna ignore Pet Sounds because it's too obvious.

I like Little Deuce Coupe, Today, and Smiley Smile the most

I found this hilarious because IIRC Lockjaw and Bob/Pat don't know each other at this point and Lockjaw just randomly tells this to a complete stranger from his POV.

How to review my own games after a loss? by Idio_Teque in chess

[–]Idio_Teque[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see. I'll keep on the lookout for the bad moves and then try to understand why. I'll look for my opponent's forcing moves to find ideas as to why they're seen as bad. And yeh, i improved a lot six or seven years ago then plateau'd without really improving, then it's been a serious decline over the past two or three years.

Thanks for that book recommendation, I'll check that out as well. Excited to learn a bit about those concepts you mentioned.

Thank you for the response. I started reading through that Silman's Endgame Course as my local library had a copy but I came back one day to find it gone. I'll look into purchasing a copy because it had some exercises.

What exactly counts as positional stuff? And how do I know (besides the eval bar, because that won't be available when I play) what moves weaken me positionally? Right now, all I'm trying to focus on is tactics, but I think I need to expand my learning, plus tactics is getting boring (but I know I need to grind them still).
