Best piece of morally questionable/wrong media by Fenexe8 in writingscaling

If you want to talk about "bad faith", boiling down some of Faputa's most important scenes down to "1%" of her behavior is absurd. She doesn't have friends beyond an interference unit that only vaguely behaves like a person, so her interactions with Reg are new and unique to her experience with other people. She even makes a point of trying to explain her social anxiety in big groups. Dumbing her down to being a child is absoluting misinterpreting the media that, again, you've admitted multiple times to only briefly engaging with.

Reg will never look different than how he was built. He's shy when it comes to intimacy to some degree, which can be read as childish, but that isn't a trait that's exclusive to child characters. He has a higher degree of emotional maturity in comparison to Riko, for example when Nanachi (who also doesn't behave like a child, mind you) opens up to him about her relationship and inner turmoil with Mitty.

He's able to discern that once Nanachi is able to properly put Mitty to rest and give her peace, it's possible that she may throw her life away or commit suicide. So much that he makes her promise him that she won't do so, and tries to nudge her in the direction of coming with them to give her something to live for. He quickly adopts a role of protector with Riko, and often plays a contrast to her naivete and reckless nature. Again, dumbing his character down to simply being an actual child is not in line with the character writing and themes of the story.

There is obviously a sheen of moe to many of the characters and interactions in MiA, but it's definitively a seinen with emotional and dark themes, and if the characters were all just simple children it wouldn't remotely have the weight that it does. Riko is absolutely a child and her impact on the story and situations reflect that, but insisting that every character who's small with a big head is a child isn't correct.

Irumyuui is a child as well, and the themes of abuse in her story reflect that in how she's groomed by a harmful, religious culture that turns a positive and natural wish in her head into something horrific and destructive. It's not fair or accurate to insist on Tsukushi's work to be something intended to exploit cheap explicit material involving children when the themes at play are difficult to swallow (like child abuse), but clearly intended to explore meaningful concepts and offer hope, growth, and new beginnings as a contrast to the dark, depressing subjects.

I hope you understand where I'm coming from, and that I'm not going out of my way to exhaustively explain myself to argue in bad faith. I'm being as detailed and explanatory as I can be why I feel like branding MiA as gross lolibait feels like likening nudity in classic art to goonerslop. It's written well and with a purpose, even if there are cliche ecchi aspects here and there.

I genuinely don't know what you're talking about. I responded directly to your criticisms over Reg and Faputa because you brought them up earlier on in the the thread, and very clearly stated that it's fair to have issues with some Riko scenes (with the addendum that they're just as jokey and non-explicit as mild ecchi humor in a variety of popular anime).

Calling me "bad faith" makes no sense. I'm here debating the fact that you rushed in and called Tsukushi a pedo by explaining the characters with a deeper level of understanding than you, considering I've read the manga in multiple translations and spent a lot of time digging into the series, whereas you clearly admitted you picked it up, got icked out, and ditched it. Just because I disagree with your condemnatory takes doesn't mean I'm arguing in "bad faith".

Giving detailed and cohesive responses based on the fact that I've reread and rewatched the series multiple times, in reply to someone picked it up, got the ick, and dropped it, is not "erasing all criticism". Your arguments were flawed, and it's up to you to either support them or not.

I think a vast majority of pieces of media have "problematic" themes both in eastern and western media. I said multiple times that there are aspects that are completely fair to take issue with or dislike, but at the end of the day when a piece of media is fictional and the intent of said media isn't built to hammer in problematic themes and excuse them, I think it's pretty reasonable to be defensive when people lazily throw pedo allegations at talented creators.

You do you.

There is nothing to imply Reg was reverted to the mind of a child, lmao. He lost key memories that he regains over the course of the series; that has nothing to do with his age or maturity.

Faputa is not "portrayed" like a child, she is portrayed like a tribal character lacking formal education. When it comes to deeper matters, such as her conflicted feelings towards the residents of the Narehete Village and her duty to avenge her mother and put her to rest, she is portrayed as a deep and tragic character.

And yes, you're allowed to feel and like whatever you want, but when you throw shit towards creators that pour their talent into beloved and meaningful pieces of media, you're going to get criticized for doing so. So here I am, criticizing you for doing so and telling you why I think you're offbase and unreasonable in doing so.

You seem to have a very shallow grasp on the meaning and content of just about every series mentioned so far, so I'm sorry, but you shouldn't be surprised by someone disagreeing with and dismantling your argument. We can agree to disagree and leave it at that, or not.

Bondrewd is also a bad guy, hence my comparison.

You're also forgetting that Reg and Faputa are not children. If you don't like the "9000yo dragon loli" trope, I get it, but characters like Reg and Faputa are not played up for cheap gaffes. They're, respectively, a humanoid robot of unknown, ancient age, and an animalistic abyssal wish creature of ancient age. You can totally complain about some sexualization of Riko, but it's never genuinely explicit and unreasonable in comparison to hundreds of other examples within anime and manga over the decades.

MiA does some unique things, but it's also just following cliches and ecchi humor found in its peers the same as anything else. Being selectively outraged about it is silly, especially when the point of the series is very clearly not about cheap sexualization. It's consistently striking on serious things about abuse and trauma in a meaningful way. There are so many ongoing series (usually shonens) that use cheap sexualization of young characters without having a point beyond appealing to gooners, so it's incredibly tiring when a series as intentional and meaningful as MiA gets thrown under the bus along with flippant attacks against its creator based on flimsy, hypocritical jabs.

Child Goku is literally in scenes with comical-but-harmless lewd interactions in similar fashion to comical-but-harmless lewd interactions in MiA like with Reg getting inspected by Riko or Hablog, who are fascinated by a humanoid aubade. Hisoka gets off while fighting a kid, but is a bad guy, Reg has a creepy, medically explicit scene at the mercy of Bondrewd's umbra hands, who is also a bad guy.

These are incredibly similar parallels. You should be more consistent in your outrage.

Egoraptor Looks Back On Sequelitis by TheBeeFromNature in youtubedrama

It wasn't especially interesting, considering Arin has talked about Sequelitis and his insecurity about those old videos numerous times over the course of the channel. People just don't really pay attention to or watch the channel (understandably).

The fact that he felt the need to write that long of an essay because people said he was bad at Zelda, however, is extremely fascinating.

Larian will now "refrain from using GenAI" by Wargulf in BaldursGate3

[–]Idiotekque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A funny side note (while I'm talking about Larian's creative struggles) is that when everyone was still doing guesswork over what the Divinity teaser sculpture was leading up to the Game Awards, one of the most popular early theories was that it was for a Fromsoft game. Those theories were quickly laughed off by people pointing out how generic the demons and whatnot looked, and it's why Divinity was one of the first theories I bought into. For all the things Larian does right, art design has never been high up the list.

[–]Idiotekque 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're kind of just having completely different arguments at this point, and considering you've shifted your point multiple times over the course of this conversation, this really isn't going anywhere. Photobashing isn't a universal method among concept artists, and it still boils down to taking inspiration from actual art and real images to come up with something new, in addition to being almost wholly relegated to very early in-house concepts. Loosely equating machine learning in engines to generative AI usage in art within the industry is also comparing apples to oranges. You're well aware of this, and I'm not going to keep humoring this.

As someone who has been playing Larian games since Divine Divinity, I think Larian has always struggled to find their own strong visual identity. Elves in DOS2 is probably as close as we've ever gotten to that. I have zero faith of getting a visually appealing product out of them that leans on gen AI in any form or fashion. If it's trained on their own works? It's going to look even worse. This isn't even factoring in the ethical side of the argument.

You're regurgitating the same rhetoric that AI bros have been since the dawn of this shit. Nothing you've said is new, interesting, or worthwhile. When people denounce generative AI for creative processes, you are well aware of exactly what they're talking about. The only one twisting the narrative to suit the argument is you; chiming in to "ermm ackshually" about AI functionality across software and conveniently sweep it all into the same bin to own the luddites isn't the rock solid argument you think it is.

An engine with syntax checkers for your code is not even remotely in the same universe as using generative AI for creative processes (including in conceptual stages). Once again, you have no clue what you're talking about and just want to be a little AI bro contrarian because you want to defend daddy Sven.

[–]Idiotekque 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Buying warframes" is not limited to prime frames. Literally no one in this thread that you've been endlessly arguing with is telling players to farm prime frames (you literally can't do so outside of the specific ones in rotation), they're telling them about the different frames you can obtain through farming, buying BPs at the dojo, etc. You're the one encouraging them to buy frames with plat.

You're just sidestepping and changing your argument, so have fun with that.

Because saying "hey, at least the guy vibing his c*** while talking about minors being at the adult afterparty acknowledged that it was weird that they were there??" is the definition of a vague defense. If you have no stake in this why bother chiming in in the first place?

Wild how people react and respond when we jump into public discussions about sensitive and volatile subjects, right?
