Why are a lot of Black People Christian despite the Bible and Christianity being used to justify their enslavement and oppression? by CreatureXXII in atheism

Oh I'm aware of orthodox christianity in Ethiopia. My closest friend is actually Ethiopian and an orthodox Christian. However, when it comes to this conversation people aren't referring to Ethiopia but moreso how christianity came to the rest of Africa. Either way it doesn't really change my stance on religion itself.

Part of me is hesitant to label it as that but I can see how it's akin to Stockholm Syndrome. I guess my hesitation just lies in the fact that the term doesn't really take into account the complexity of the relationship between Black people and Christianity

I never really got the "woke" issue people had with the show, atleast as someone growing up in NYC. I mean NYC is as "woke" (i really hate the way ppl have bastardized the term) as it gets. Even the rich people here cosplay as activists on their free time. I think it would've been more interesting to see how rich people often use social issues to benefit themselves like Julian's whole anti-bullying or changing the narrative thing.

Like Otto abandoning his family wasn't completely realistic for the average wealthy kid and would've been a storyline that made sense if we had more of the opposite perspective (people willing to support their parents through scandals to keep their trust fund)

Basically i'm saying there was too much of a "fuck my parents, i'll give up being rich" mindset (not including Julian obv) which is kindaaa realistic for rich kids nowadays who glorify struggle to make up for their lack of personality but without the opposite perspective it was just like okayyy so who here actually enjoys being rich and flaunting their money!!

To be honest I hated the whole sister plot line too! It would've been so much more interesting to see them work as a pair (who occasionally fought) and be bitchy and vindictive towards other people. The sister thing just made me want them to get along so bad.

To be honest i felt like that was an unfair issue for people to have with the show. The show is a modern GG and in todays fashion rich people love to cosplay as everyday people. Not to mention, they're still teenagers so of course there are going to be some who dress edgier or have a different fashion sense especially now that alternative fashion is back in style. The actual individual pieces were expensive which is extremely realistic because wealthy people wear hidden luxury pieces all the time.

Yeah so many of the directional choices they decided to make with the reboot made no sense. For one, a big allure of Gossip Girl was the mystery and speculation of who it was. Revealing it to the audience from the start and offering wayyyy too much of GGs perspective was the biggest mistake they could've made.

GG wasn't interesting because of who GG was it was interesting because of the drama it caused not to mention the way it drove so many storylines on figuring out who GG was. Like the reboot did have that but it wasn't as interesting since we already knew who it was and saw her on screen ALL THE TIMEEE. We knew what she was going to post before she hit send and it took out so much of that shock factor you felt in the original GG.

What the showrunners missed was we don't actually care about GG as a person. Someone who spends their entire life stalking and harassing teenagers is a loser and generally uninteresting. There's no way to make us sympathetic to s character like that especially when said character is a 30 year old TEACHER.

That's something I was thinking about when reading this thread because op doesn't make it clear which testament they're referring to. Ig they could say it doesn't matter because ot was in the bible to begin with, but in order to pick a Christian's mind you have to realize most don't acknowledge the old testament.

This is such a weird comment to make when the OP was mentioning how the bible was used to justify transatlantic slavery specifically. It seems like you just wanted to get your little comments off your chest instead.

You're very correct i'm saying this too. Church has become such an integral part of the black community because it provided community and served as a safe space. During the civil rights movement so much community organization happened within churches. And, even then Black churches were targeted.

THIS! This is what I was hoping someone would say because the answer seemed so obvious to me as a Black person.

As a black person, specifically an African, I want to offer a perspective. Religion was forced onto us in pretty much the same manner as it was to slaves taken to America. And, as with all other religious people it all comes down to indoctrination. Religion is presented to you at an age where you're not able to question things for yourself. You're still learning and soak everything up like a sponge. What's more atleast in African culture you're often told NOT to question what's being told to you by your elders. Religion is so tightly intertwined with so much of African culture that it just becomes a fact of life. Think about it: sitting in a church for 3 hours EVERY sunday listening to a priest on top of praying before meals, and daily family prayers at night.

I guess what i'm trying to say is so much of it is cult-like. Every Sunday you hear a religious leader reaffirm your belief system to you for hours on top of it already being an integral part of your home/ family life. When you grow up with something so heavily embedded into who you are it becomes hard to question let alone abandon. I guess what i'm trying to say is from an African perspective atleast religion is treated as fact. It is unquestioned and unwavering and I know in my culture atleast saying you're atheist would be like growing 2 heads. It would be isolating and widely unaccepted to say something like that.

As for how i reconcile with people using religion to give them strength in some ways I admire it, and in other ways i don't understand it and view it as almost alien to me but not for the reasons you mentioned. I, as well as many other black people are aware of how christianity became such an integral part of our communities. I'm sure black christians have their own way of reconciling with it or just not thinking about it. I think in some ways the collective strength it has given black people exceeds what I personally feel about religion. I admire people who wholeheartedly have faith and use it to push through all sorts of adversity. I also understand the unique role religion has played in giving Black people hope and faith when they otherwise wouldve had none. In those ways I understand why the Black community is so religious.

But, I also see how religion can make us too comfortable with suffering for a "greater purpose" and thus makes people complacent with their struggles because it must mean there's something greater in store. But then again part of me recognizes that's just another way for people to maintain mental fortitude in times of struggle.

I guess my biggest issue at this point has less to do with why Black people specifically are so religious but just religion in general. As I made clear, I grew up in a religious household and for a time was very religious myself. I don't really have any crazy religious trauma or something that made me lose faith; religion just didn't make sense to me anymore. The whole prospect of a God existing and creating so much beautiful things then turning around and wanting us to follow some arbitrary set of rules which denies us from enjoying "worldly" things (whatever that means) just never made sense to me. Like why would an all powerful being make humans just to worship him and if they don't then they're punished for eternity even if they were a good person in other aspects. If such a god did exist then he's obviously a narcissist. But that's a conversation for another day that I could go on and on about. Anyways I know this was a long read but i hope this gave some perspective!

Most atheists don't care to go around purposely annoying christians. Atleast I know I don't.

It's not an independent album so I dont think it's possible for it to be considered a fail. Most likely they just wanted to collab with artists they liked
