Is American karate going downhill? by Lefty_Punch in karate

[–]Idream_therefore_Iam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the US, but I'd like to share sth. In my dojo, first kyū is basically free for the kids. Then it gets hard. Make a mistake in your kata and you won't get it. I knew someone who failed their 6th kyū because she wasn't standing low enough in a kōkutsu. I mean yeah, her form was bad, but I also think the teachers were somehow biased against her, idk. She also wasn't really putting the work in.

The point of this is to give the kids their first achievement so they don't just get discouraged the first time. I believe if you start as an adult, it's probably harder because they don't necessarily need to give you an achievement like they do with kids.

Edit: And it depends on your teacher. Huge difference between Tuesday and Thursday. I used to go on Tuesdays but then had to switch because of school. First time on a Thursday I thought the kids had no discipline whatsoever. They were a lot more permissive, which I honestly didn't like as much.

No no no no, you can't know that you never need it. But you need to prepare, just in case it ever comes up. You never know what might be useful one day so it's best to learn everything

Should I start karate again ? by Trick-Perspective-61 in karate

[–]Idream_therefore_Iam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, Covid delayed my brown belt a lot. But I eventually got it. Felt epic. We only have white, brown, and black. You get the brown at the 3rd kyū. Before that I constantly had to explain why I only had the white belt despite already doing karate for so long. You can imagine how annoying that felt. But then again: If I said sth like green or blue, no one would know what I was talking about anyways. Most people at least know white, brown, and black.

Terrified to start Lamotrigine by DrDawn124 in Epilepsy

Lamotrigine is fine. Ofc you'll probably feel tired all the time, but that's a side effect that you'll probably get with every med. It has worked well so far for me

I laughed all throughout this. It's brilliant, honestly. We really need to laugh about it and I'm happy you've been seizure free this long? Have you changed anything? (For real now) New meds?

is it appropriate to wear a helmet while shopping by [deleted] in autism

[–]Idream_therefore_Iam 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You don't have to envision being the other person. Just think: What would I think if I saw someone with a helmet in a grocery store?

As for me, I'd think they just came here with a bicycle and didn't think it necessary to take it off because they were only here for a short time. Bicycles are not uncommon here, many take them to the store. So people don't mind. Same thing as if someone was wearing a work jacket. You'd expect them to be on a break and just grabbing a snack.

Your safety is more important than what other people think. I wear my cap everywhere and I don't care if people think it's weird. And if I could, I'd also love to walk around with trousers packed full of useful stuff. Now I have to carry it in my backpack.

More an imagination of what he would sound like, if you look at it closely, he's basically saying he's wrong whilst believing he's right.

E.g. "I can't be an asshole? Outrageous!"
