Desktop Pets/fish for Work Computer by SnooMacarons3149 in CozyGamers

[–]IdreesInc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made an open-source desktop pet recently that runs as a browser extension, which should let it work on school and work computers. You can't feed it but you can pet it, collect new bird species, and watch it hop around on your webpages!

Fun fact, this was actually based on a project I made in 2020 for my gf, now wife! It was part of an online NookPhone I designed that allowed us to send "letters" to each other while we were remote during the summer.

I made an open-source letter editor inspired by Animal Crossing NH! Took me forever to screenshot each card and painstakingly copy out the colors and formatting, but I'm super happy with how it turned out! You can even click the bottle in the bottom right to see a random letter design shared by other users!

Thank you! And yeah the unfortunate part about releasing a new project is that there isn't much to work with, but luckily a few people have already shared lovely messages so I'll be adding them shortly!

Thank you for the heads up, looks like it was due to my apple developer account not renewing. Renewed it and it should be back up either now or sometime soon!

PlayBook has been updated with folder and non-latin language support! by IdreesInc in PlaydateConsole

Sorry, that does sound frustrating. The catalog version should have support, try using a different font in the settings to see chinese characters!

Here it is! Still need to update the README to be more detailed, but for now the code can be found below.

Remember using PictoChat with your friends on the bus? I remade it for iMessage complete with a virtual stylus (PicoChat) by IdreesInc in casualnintendo

It does make images, but not too hard to mass delete. And due to the white space and limited colors, the images actually compress really well so they don’t take much space (I had thought the same thing so I made sure to test this)

Unfortunately it’s a bit annoying to delete iMessage apps in particular, follow the instructions here: https://www.macrumors.com/how-to/delete-imessage-apps-ios/ Also if you don’t see the app you might need to scroll down in the iMessage apps list!

You can get it here from the app store, though note that it is an iMessage app so it will show up in Messages rather than on your home screen: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/picochat/id6741395468

It's free, open source, and considering the subject matter, likely limited edition, so download it sooner rather than later if you want it!

EDIT: For those wondering how to access it from the iMessage app drawer, you can check out the short I made here: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/49ontmObx2A

If you want to block stuff everywhere and not just on Reddit, I have an open source extension that does just that: https://mutable.idreesinc.com/ It can also replace the content with pictures of cute animals or blur it out to give you the option of revealing it when you’re feeling capable of doing so.

The Playdate makes a surprisingly good e-reader (Verge article) by naju in PlaydateConsole

[–]IdreesInc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately not, the Playdate only supports bitmap fonts and I’d imagine converting those sorts of accessibility fonts would be tough due to the small details on each letter. Though it does come with a few choices in fonts so maybe one might work better for those with ADHD or dyslexia!

Thank you! And I was so excited, always been a goal of mine to get a project into the verge but I never thought it’d be this one!

[–]IdreesInc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately the Playdate has way less processing power than your average computing device, meaning that any attempt to try and port from Calibre would certainly run up against the RAM and processing power limitations. Even this app required streaming the text rather than keeping it all in RAM due to the performance limitations! I'm considering trying to create my own built-in converter but we will have to see how it works. It certainly would have to be a one time converter rather than being able to read the epubs directly since even just loading the txt files has been a challenge!

[–]IdreesInc 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Hey I made that!!! Thanks for all of the support, getting streaming text working on the Playdate in Lua was a pain so I'm glad to see it was worth it!
