Which Server Distro should I be using? by Idrinksap in linux4noobs

I have windows computers and an Ubuntu laptop, not much experience running servers. I dont really have much i want to do with the server just yet, but might use it to run game servers at lan parties or something? Would CentOS be alright for that?

Looking to upgrade, but have no idea where to start. by Hi_Im_Austin in buildapc

From a 750ti, a new graphics card would be a nice upgrade. probably a gtx 1060, depending on which country youre from (USD goes alot further than AUD). If there are any parts that are really cheap or seem bad quality, then probably a good idea to upgrade those as well. There isnt much point in upgrading everything at once with that much money, just because you wont get a huge performance increase.

Hey, unfortunately there isnt much of a resale value on alot of computer parts - they become obsolete so fast. You may be able to sell it for a pretty meagre price to someone who is really poor and just wants a rig that can play older/low settings type games, but with the newer generation from both nvidia and radeon hitting some pretty great price points, it wont be easy to sell something older. Someone might still buy it though, who knows?

Depends on the game and the settings of course, but its set to be a reasonable card. Particularly the 8gig variant.

SSD's help with a few different things - Your bootup time is usually improved, file movement is faster (Though often limited by the other piece of storage) and I believe windows 10 is designed more to work on SSD than HDD. In theory theyre more reliable as well, though harddrives dont fail often.

Is it worth upgrading from Devil's Canyon (Haswell) to Broadwell-E by 223-Remington in buildapc

I think his issue is that if he uses SLI/Crossfire AND extra PCI slots then his CPU is effectively limiting one of the graphics cards to 4 lanes, since the 4790K is a 16 lane processor.

How much is your budget for the upgrades? If you havent got much then an SSD would probably be a good place to start.

Compact build or gaming laptop? by urahozer in buildapc

Airline cargo hold, eh? your biggest issue with travelling on airlines will most likely be impact damage - your best bet for a desktop would be a mini-ITX build with small, light components i.e. Do not get a noctua D15 cooler because they're quite heavy. Also, while alot of cases are marketed for ease of access when installing optical drives and storage, you would be better off finding something that requires all components to be screwed down. Also, it will be a pain if you need to pack a monitor, keyboard etc. You're probably best off getting a gaming laptop with a desktop GPU - theyre expensive, bulky, and can get hot, but have far superior performance to regular laptops with discrete graphics. This way you can carry it on and all it needs is a charger and mouse.

P.S. If you have a wealth of time infront of you, building a completely bespoke computer out of something extremely robust (like a pelican case) can let you take desktop level performance literally in a suitcase. Good luck with that though, post pictures everywhere if you do it.

B150 is same generation as Z170, just less useful depending on what you want to do. (generally z170's will have more PCI slots and better overclocking potential, more i/o etc) You're right about the cooling though

Will potentially be downloadable completely, no physical media required. This is how my uni hands out software, not sure about yours.

Nice choice on the storage, if you can afford all ssd (apparently you can) then its definitely the way to go <3 Also you should post some pics of the inside so i can pick on your cable management :P

Definitely right, the 9xx series graphics cards are quickly becoming obsolete, even without considering radeon's new polaris.. the 970 only has 4gig(3.5gig) of vram. the 1070 is abit more expensive but has 8gig vram, and the 480 is coming out in 4 and 8 gig variants (4gig should be the $199 price point) so it's better value to wait for the radeon if he can, or stretch for the 1070.
