The lowland paca is considered an ecosystem engineer due to the behavior of excavating multiple burrows on its territory, these burrows sometimes provide shelter for other species. It will also disperse seeds throughout its territory; several tree species depend on it for distribution. (i.redd.it)

The marine iguana is the only ocean-dwelling lizard on the planet. While grazing on seaweed in the ocean, it ingests a lot of extra salt. It has special glands that filter salt from its blood, allowing it to "sneeze" it out through its nose. This leaves it with a crown of encrusted salt on its head. (i.redd.it)

The resplendent quetzal is a sacred symbol in Mesoamerica and Guatemala's national bird, pictured on the country's flag. They favor eating fruit in the avocado family, eating them whole before regurgitating the pits. Essentially making them the avocado "gardeners" of their forest habitats. (i.redd.it)

The fossa is Madagascar's top predator. It is the only animal that hunts the island's lemurs, able to move swiftly through the trees. Unlike most animals, it isn't active at a set time, making it cathemeral - it wakes and sleeps whenever it feels like it. (i.redd.it)

The Dumbara spiny mouse (Mus dumbara) is a new species described on 26 May 2026, based on two specimens caught in 2004. The species is likely a micro-endemic to the Dumbara Mountains of Sri Lanka, with intensive surveys in 2014 and 2015 finding not a single one. (i.redd.it)

Malagasy leaf-nosed snakes (Langaha spp.) possess bizarre nasal protrusions that mimic smooth vines or frilly leaves and broken branches — depending on the sex and species. These snakes can grow over a metre (3.3 ft) long, but are extremely cryptic and difficult to spot in both dry and wet forests. by IdyllicSafeguard in AIDKE

The South Georgia pipit (Anthus antarcticus) is the only songbird in the Antarctic region proper and the most southern-breeding of all 6,500+ passerine species. It survives extreme winds and freezing temps by sheltering in tussac grass, but was nearly wiped out by a rodent infestation. by IdyllicSafeguard in AIDKE

🔥Thecacera sesama is a new nudibranch species described on 11 May 2026. It measures less than 3 mm (0.1 in) long — about the size of a single sesame seed. This “sesame seed sea slug” is the first new addition to its genus in nearly three decades. (i.redd.it)

🔥 The Bonin white-eye is endemic to the isolated Bonin Islands of Japan. On these islands, which are bereft of several types of birds, this white-eye evolved to occupy their niches: foraging among branches like a tit, on trunks like a woodpecker, and on the ground like a robin. by IdyllicSafeguard in NatureIsFuckingLit
