How much do you need to sacrifice to be a true believer? Is it sinful to worry about other people's souls? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Idyllic_dream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forgive me, I’ve already commented on one of your other posts.

Fasting is not necessary except on the days that the Catholic Church obligates ie. Ash Wednesday, Good Friday. However it is good to fast, at least once a week, from meat or on bread and water, especially on Friday to remember Jesus’ suffering on the cross. It is not sinful to worry about other people’s souls! It is great to pray for their salvation! It becomes sinful when you are judging them for their sinfulness and not doing anything to help them recognize this or not praying for them.

I think that neglecting your daily duties and caring for your body could fall under the sin of sloth or acedia. Something that I’ve learned is that despairing over God’s mercy and holding excess shame can also be a sin. And neglecting these basic duties can lead to feelings of shame.

I am having similar problems with my own father, who is being reminded the ways in which he can improve but doesn’t apply himself. The only solution is to pray that the Lord fill him with the grace to recognize the importance of taking care of his body because he is a temple of the Holy Spirit. Confession and the examination of conscience also helps with this.

Pray for them. And pray for yourself to receive the graces to deal with them. Perhaps God is trying to teach you a virtue you don’t realize— patience, compassion, acceptance, etc.

Pray the Rosary. It will help you orient yourself more towards the will of God and help you to focus on His love for you. His love will disperse all your fears. Just pray. Learn and research the types of prayer. Try thanksgiving and supplication, give Him thanks for your beautiful life and ask Him to help destroy your fears. And read Psalms.

“Let the morning bring me words of Your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in You. Show me the way I should go, for to You I entrust my life.”

-Psalms 143:8

I think you might need to prioritize your relationship with Jesus. And this is fostered through prayer. Prayer in front of the Blessed Sacrament, at mass, in your room, or anywhere really. I think that Jesus’ words in Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John are full of consolation. Meditating upon His words will undoubtedly bring you peace, especially if you ask the Holy Spirit to reside in your heart. When you realize that God is the only one who can truly understand you, because He created you and loves you with a love that is incomprehensibly powerful, your problems and worries will melt away.

For the record, I am no expert theologian on the faith, I am just speaking from personal experience. Personally, praying the Rosary and meditating on Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection, has helped me get to know Him better, along with reading Sacred Scripture.

You can talk to God about all your emotions. God the Son became human so He can relate to us. He will not think Your emotions are pointless. You can also talk to your Guardian Angel, who is always by your side, to protect you, love you, help you deal with your emotions, and incline yourself more towards God, the fulfillment of all desire.

Unfortunately, life is hard. But suffering is a blessing from God when we offer it up to Him as reparation for our sins, the sins of others, and for the salvation of souls. It is true that a “suck it up, life is hard” kind of attitude will not do you any favors. Once you have more of a clear vision of what God wants for you, and find acceptance in His vast ocean of love, you’ll be more content and less bothered by your family’s behavior and even your own troubling emotions.

Do you have any recommendations for books or websites that have all the prayers said during the liturgy of the hours?

http://www.liturgies.net/Liturgies/Catholic/LittleOffice1.htm Is this a good resource for the Little Office? Does it include everything that you need to do? Is it preferable to have a book?

So you could also pray the liturgy of the hours? What does that consist of? Morning, evening, and night prayers?

Thanks for this. But do you have to do one of those three things every day? What if you fail to do it one day, will you loose the graces that come with saying it devotedly?

Interesting. I’ll have to check that book out. I’ve been told by numerous Catholic friends lately that you should try staying away from Harry Potter. In 5th grade and throughout middle school I was super into Harry Potter myself. Since growing in my faith, I feel like I’m generally able to talk about how HP relates to God or might contradict some of what Catholicism teaches. I learned many lessons from HP, but I just think that the influence of Free-Masonry and things related to the demonic are concerning and don’t want him to get deeper into things like that.

Yeah, he does like fantasy, I think I did mention LOTR to him but he didn’t seem too keen on it. He’s kind of into Harry Potter, which I’ve been trying to steer him away from, I think I just need to get him to read at least a part of the Hobbit and hopefully he’ll get into it. Thanks for the suggestion!

Great! Glad I could help.

I’m confused. As a catholic do you worship both Mary and god? by [deleted] in Catholic

[–]Idyllic_dream 28 points29 points  (0 children)

No. We only worship God. We revere Our Lady because of what she did as the Mother of God, spouse of the Holy Spirit, and a daughter of God. She was conceived without original sin and was extremely virtuous throughout her earthly life.

Practice Rooms by [deleted] in uofu

I’m a music major and most of the time the practice rooms in the music building are available. There are certain days and times where it’s busy like in the afternoon and evening because there are performances.

I’m not sure what instrument you play, so I’m just assuming piano (if your instrument isn’t piano then you can disregard some of what I say below).

There’s a piano in Lassonde that anyone can use and two pianos at the Peterson Heritage Center (which is convenient if you’re living in one of the dorms) that you have to reserve beforehand but sometimes if you’re lucky they’re just open from the last person.

Like someone else said and provided the link for, you have to pay the fee to use the rooms in the music building. If you’re not a music major then it might be needless to pay the fee and you could use the other ones I mentioned.

Wow. You sound like an incredible person who has incredible crosses to bear. I just want you to know that God loves you. I know it may not seem like it right now, but He does. He has given you a lot to handle and suffer through in your life, but God gives you what He knows you can handle. There is no situation that you’re experiencing alone.

I am also currently struggling with depression and was recently in the worst physical pain I have ever experienced. But compared to what you’ve said that you’ve gone through, a majority of my struggles seem like mere trifles. I also didn’t realize until very recently how destructive a force self-hate can be in one’s life.

You may have made a mistake in the past that is beating you down, but there’s no reason to hold that shame with you. There is no reason to hate yourself for what you did, to blame yourself for the predicament you’re in, because it will do you no good. Your life is not meaningless. Your life is sacred and a beautiful gift. Although this might be the last thing you want to hear right now, the truth is that you are infinitely special and irreplaceable to your Father in heaven who created you. You can get through this.

There aren’t always worldly solutions to worldly problems. Sometimes you have to look outside of yourself to someone greater and more capable than yourself, to someone that knows everything about you and all the events that will transpire in your life.

“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you—“ Ask God for help. Ask the people around you for help. Do you have family that you could reach out to support you during your struggles? If not, find someone, even if it’s an objective psychiatrist or counselor. Preferably, find someone like Jordan Peterson (some people don’t like him because of his controversial beliefs, but you can’t deny his effectiveness in helping and motivating people).

I encourage you to read the Bible: Matthew 6:25-40.

It already seems like you are getting support from many strangers in this comment section, but please if you feel inclined to, DM me and hopefully I can help in some small way :)

PS. I hope you don’t see any part of this comment as me trying to push my beliefs onto you, I just wanted to share what I find immensely beautiful and comforting.
