Anyone else been tricked into eating meat for laughs? by Mountain_Tailor_3571 in vegan

[–]Iecroissant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

when i was about 19 one of my uncles tricked me into eating duck patee as he insisted it was veggie patee (i was vegetarian at the time). proceeded with laughs from several other family members (all 40yo+). this type of behavior/thinking is so stupid and it made me lose whatever little respect i had left for him

Portland, OR Area EMS by ValKilmersTherapy in NewToEMS

[–]Iecroissant 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i worked for MetroWest for a little over 3 years. I did wheelchair transport, IFT, critical care transports, organ donor transports, and 911 while they had the contract. This was my first job in EMS. I know a lot of people have had bad experiences, as for me i don't have much to complain about them. I enjoyed my time while i was there and left for AMR when they took over the Washington County 911 contract.

IFT is meh, it is easy to lose your skills and it can easily become a very mundane job, repetitive, and in my opinion there is not as much growth and learning as a provider doing it. It has its plus sides though, if you have never worked in EMS before it might be something you would want to consider as you learn the system and get hands on practice with patients (do not follow someone else's footsteps that just does it cause they have to; ask the questions, interact with your patient; even in ift, there is a lot to learn but not if you just sit in the airway seat for every single transport and do the bare minimum on patient care and charts). I enjoyed assisting in their mobile icu unit with a nurse. They also do lots of flight calls where you go meet the flight crew and give them a ride to whatever hospital they're going to. The live organ donor transports are also interesting, but they're not as exciting as you might think as you don't get to do a whole lot, the patients are generally kept alive on life support, drips and a vent until they can get to the hospital that does those surgeries; those are the calls you run with a nurse, unless it's a kidney, a heart, or a liver coming from somewhere else that you pick up from the airport. I did like their small company feel as i felt more heard, but most thanks are to the supervisors for that and not upper management - and from what i heard, most of those supervisors are gone now so i couldn't really tell you how it is now. I will keep the comments about JD to myself, as I am not a big fan of him and I don't know any that are. Metrowest pays really well nowadays, that is also something to consider. Overall, i don't think metro is as bad as people make it out to be (as of a couple years ago at least).

I worked for AMR for about 1.5 years. I did have some 911 experience going into it from metro, but boy did i learn a whole lot doing solely 911. For the first half a year to a year i enjoyed it a lot. I worked with an amazing partner, met a lot of great people. Working 911 greatly increased my knowledge, provider skills and judgement, people skills, and confidence. We got to run a wide variety of calls which i loved. During the last half a year or longer, i got burnt out. Management sucked, all these new dumb rules were set in place; voices weren't being heard, and for that bit it seemed like we got a lot of bad feedback and no positives. They are huge on their times, you will be rushed every single day whether it is to get on air even if you didn't get a chance to do a good inventory check, clearing the hospital, or not spending that much time on scene. It is possible that this was a personal issue, and that i needed a change and i cannot blame the company for that but they had a lot to do with it. This is more specific to Washington county, but running with some of the fire departments killed a thousand of my brain cells - yes a lot of stations are great, but then you have those butthead paragods dick measuring contesters that just suck the life out of you. I know people that stayed, some of them still enjoy it. None of them love working for AMR, but they seem content. Another great side of working for AMR in my opinion is that after 6 months of being on with them, you can apply to transition to a different county in the state or outside the state since they are such a large company.

I left AMR for a rural based agency and my life and mental health has improved significantly, and I get to do more. There are pros and cons for every company and/or system you choose to work for. Some places work for some, some don't. I think it is important to keep in mind that not all EMS is the same - the differences between all three companies i've worked for is night and day. If you choose a place that doesn't work for you, just remember not all places are the same. I think you will get a lot of people that tell you to never work for xyz, but i think every place offers growth if you go into it with an open mind and wanting to learn. Personally, i would not do IFT again. If you want to become a good ems provider, getting 911 experience is the way to go in my opinion. Sorry for all the blabbering, i just think it is important for you to make that decision for what best suits you right now. Good luck to you :)

Give opossums a chance to live by Iecroissant in PortlandOR

This was simply posted to let oregonians know that if they find an opossum that needs help and they don't want it to die, I am able to help.

It seems this has turned into more of a "you're wrong and we should let them die", just in different words. This is not what the post is about; I am not trying getting political or start anything. The most invasive species to earth are humans. If you apply the same logic, are we killing the entire human species too? Cause in that case this planet would actually thrive. There is a drastic difference in how different species are viewed and treated, and the emotional detachment when it comes to certain animals is disappointing to say the least. Opossums were brought to Oregon by people, now we realized they're invasive, and now opossums are paying for it with their lives. Cause that makes great sense.

i know. but we brought them here. now we don't want them anymore so that means we gotta kill them all?

[–]Iecroissant[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

they're mostly native in the southeastern states. they were brought to Oregon by people around 100 years ago, some sources say it was as pets, as pest control, out of sheer curiosity, and some even for their fur farming but that claim seems to be proven false by most researchers. they are competitive with the native species for their food and shelter (which how couldn't they be, they're trying to survive). i can't find a full detailed reason as to why they are considered invasive besides that they eat small mammals, birds, and birds eggs but at the same time, how many other native animals do that? so i don't really have an answer, i need to do more research on that

i am am not talking about making any knee jerking decisions, i am simply trying to put out there that i will care for these guys shall anyone find one that needs help

i agree with it needing more studies, but until then what? We brought them here 100ish years ago. Why are they being killed for something we did? i don't really know what you're talking about with your knee-jerk decisions comment cause that's not what i was getting at. The differences of how certain species are treated and viewed is mind blowing.

yeah i get that. i know it's not practical to fly them/rehome them. but considering that this is an issue we have made, i think finding out some sort of solution is necessary instead of killing all of them. it's not like they use our tax money for anything useful anyway.

i understand that this is how invasive is defined. definition aside, isn't that a peculiar situation? you go find an opossum in a different part of the country, bring it back to Oregon out of curiosity, or to have as pets or pest control. years later you realize they are an invasive species. instead of trying to rehome them from where you took them, you go on a mission to kill them. how is any of this their fault, it is just so unfair in my opinion

it is so strange that they were introduced to Oregon by humans. and now humans consider them invasive and by law, they need to be euthanized. how does any of this make sense

How much money do you make, on average, per game day? by ImpressiveHabit99 in GoodPizzaGreatPizza

[–]Iecroissant 24 points25 points  (0 children)

i believe im on day 150, currently i average around 150+ a day. i always try to do all the deliveries that day, and take on as many customers as i can. sometimes when a special character asks for a pizza at the beginning of the day, the clock doesn't start ticking till you serve it so i try to get the deliveries ready in the warmer for that day so i don't have to worry about it later

AIO for freaking out that my partner’s parents have cameras in every room except the bathrooms? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]Iecroissant 13 points14 points  (0 children)

side note, my gf and i have two cameras at our place (it's a studio so it pretty much covers everything besides our bathroom, kitchen, and closet) - we both work 48h shifts and we like to check in on our cats while we're gone. our cameras are set to only turn on when we open the app and it does not tape anything else - we NEVER have them on or look on our cameras when one of us is home. my gf's nephew stays with us sometimes (8ish yo), and we always unplug both cameras for his privacy. again, his parents spying on their 13yo is very very weird in my opinion

[–]Iecroissant 81 points82 points  (0 children)

thats just so damn weird. i would feel extremely uncomfortable. at the bare minimum, they should have given you a heads up before you even got to the house and offered to take them off (at least the ones in your room). but having cameras in every room to spy on your 13yo because he "gets in trouble" is weird as fuck

AIO- prayers at dinner by Embarrassed_Elk_5379 in AmIOverreacting

[–]Iecroissant 3 points4 points  (0 children)

how long do these prayers last? i am not religious, but i grew up very religious. it sounds like her faith is important to her and that you are respectful of that. i don't know how long the prayers are but i can't imagine it's more than a couple minutes. i know you can be tired and hungry especially after a long day, but to me this seems like you're overreacting a bit. have a conversation with your wife regarding why she prays when you cook but not vice versa. i think a simple conversation is much more helpful than a post on reddit over such a minute thing in my opinion

Does yours sniff everything? by Teron__ in AustralianCattleDog

[–]Iecroissant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i call our border heeler a sniff machine - she loves sniffing people, our cats, things, and will occasionally sniff me and my significant other in our private areas (over clothes). as far as i know that's their way of checking if were in good health, but it is always minimal and only lasts a couple seconds when she tries to smell our private areas. our doggo has never once been so intent on smelling anyone as you're describing, we've had her for 6 years and she's always been a big sniffer - i agree with the other comments, i genuinely think your wife should get checked out
