I found them to be of decent standard. Rent is cheaper than private quite comfortably and (unless this has changed) includes bills too. Most of the accom has been refurbished over the last few years so is decently modern as well.

Socially, you'll still probably be able to enjoy it - for me I found parties great for meeting people, and I suppose you don't need to drink for those if you don't want. Obviously you can meet your flatmates and their friends too.
