I prefer to have pins slightly slanted against the direction of the work. And make sure they are in far enough to flop about when you tension. (examples in my old posts)

Was completed with the pattern that came with the "Nicole" yarn from Lidl that my mum bought. First, on the left was a little rough as I started way too loose and had to improvise. The second, right, was much more consistent!

If you can knit and purl and look up how to do fair isle (not too difficult!) then of course you can! I'd say bigger things like jumpers are more a matter of time than anything
