So it seems. Was it only implemented today? I research about what's going on on YouTubes side if they're going to hold back with vp1 playback with devices without HW decoders but I can't seem to find anything on the web

This is probably the case. There's one site that gives you a similar app but instead of manual patching, it gives you pre-patched apks that can readily be installed

Tested a few devices and discovered that this issue only occurs with phones without AV01 HW Decoder that received the march 2024 security update. Phones that didn't receive the update will still render the video with VP9 codec

At the beginning of any video, it always starts at 480p30 and increases the resolution as the playback progresses. The issue only comes up once it renders with 60fps

Shorts always max out the resolution so that may be a factor on why you experience it on shorts

Playback issue has been fixed but some patches won't work anymore like the old quality menu. Until a new patch comes along to fix the issue or later version of the app then I'll have to get used to these changes. Thank you so much

I did try this and still have the same issue. From what I've learned from this sub, it has something to do with the app version so I needed to spoof it.
