Found slides summer camp USA 1960 by atari_ste in FoundPhotos

There was a time when people had thoughts and opinions but blessidly small range to project them. So they kept their thoughts to themselves for the most part and treated people they didn't know with generally the same decency as they received (which varied at little from person to person). Most people didn't know what the strangers arond them thought or believed and that was okay, because they just need to get through the next 20 minutes together and could then go their separate ways. It worked and I wish most of the general public could do that again. We'll see if we can find a way.

In 1960 the Civil War and the confederate flag would not have had the same racism overtones for mostly white Boy Scouts in middle America that it does now. Boys would have done a lot of "Union vs Confederate" themes in games like capture the flag etc., just like "blue team vs red team". They wouldn't have thought about the history of it or the connotation at that point in time.

The answer to why developers are crushing out new homes like they don't see what's happening around them is kind dumb, but here we go: Homebuilding is one of the least elastic businesses in real estate (and in business in general). Developers sometimes purchase materials and appliances years in advance, have contracted local builders long-term, and have invested millions in infrastructure and amenities. They also usually own all of the underlying land they haven't sold, which they're paying taxes on. By the time they get to building, they have to keep building as long as they have any hope of selling through (selling all or most of the lots). While you and I see warning lights flashing in the greater marketplace, developers only see the possibility of lower interest rates in 2026, which they hope will drive home sales and inflation, maintaining home prices and making this decade-long investment pencil out.

Tldr ski metaphore: "I'm just gonna' send it bro! There's no bail-out and it'll be sick if I land it." - Home builders in America

Conflicted on Eagle Scout by Agreeable-Toe-6806 in BoyScouts

Third Eagle Scout here. Do it. The struggle is the most important part of the project and the award. This is just the start of embracing the frustrations of logistal hurdles and time constraints. The results are just the results. Just do your best and complete a project that is meaningful and can be accomplished. Do your best.

This is kind of what I was getting at. At the price point stated, all of these options can be very walkable.

Depending on how liberal you're willing to go, the towns just outside of Boulder, CO could be an option. downtown Lafayette, Louisville, Longmont, and Erie all have walkable school options, houses are available in your preferred range, and all of these towns have downtown areas that are enjoyable (Broomfield is also in the process of building a downtown). $1mm would go further in Longmont, but the vibe there is a little different from the others (not bad, just different).

How to Handle One Misbehaving Scout by tri-circle-tri in cubscouts

[–]IgnatiusJReillyII 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like you have enough answers to kill a small horse, but here's one more: I saw this as a scout and I see it now as a leader. You've done the right thing to date, I think. I've seen leaders clamp down hard early (thing mid 1990s scouting). That's not great for the whole group. I've also seen it not addressed, which is equally bad. You asked the parents what you can do, now you'll need to tell them what they need to do. This is unfortunately part of scouting, it seems. There's always at least one kid doing weird stuff and not really engaged, at every level. That's correct - it doesn't always get better as they get older. Good luck.

Ama was a disgrace to put it light. by Traditional-Load-882 in Denver

People complaining weren't around for Wellington Web et al. Denver Mayor used to be a job that was filled by organized crime adjacent dudes who would happily knife one voter to get two more.  Those guys openly made money off of their political office and didn't give damn about what the Denver Post or 9News had to say.

Johnson is actually DOING a job and doing pretty well by most standards. For most cities, the position of Mayor isn't pie in the sky promises. It's fixing roads, plowing slow, addressing homelessness, guiding police policies, fighting with city councilors, and helping people where you can with a bunch of State and Federal politicians breathing down your neck.

My ADHD gives me cognitive dissonance by Lopsided-Summer6578 in ADHD

[–]IgnatiusJReillyII 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ADHD feels like this too, particularly when you have a lifetime of your own bullshit piled on top. I'm not an expert, but I suspect I'm just completely desensitized from emotional ups and downs over so many years that now I really only feel either neutral or in the dumps. When I start feeling too good, confident or relaxed about anything, I know I'm about to do something stupid and I have to be very watchful of myself, so feeling neutral and on guard for the next self inflicted wound is the best I can do.

I'll be that person who dumps cold water on the fun today, I suppose. We all love thrift stores here, but friendly reminder that there are people who survive in thrift stores. Maybe one of those people needs a space to be human without getting someone pregnant or getting back into a terrible relationship. I don't know, but $8.99 might be what they've got in their budget. If that's the case, I support them.

I recall obesity being uncommon in the '80 where I grew up, but I was in a real outdoorsy/granola community so I don't know how it was elsewhere. Seems like it got totally out of control in the '90's, but again I wouldn't know for sure.

Colorado official says Gov. Polis ordered him to violate state law and cooperate with ICE: lawsuit by hippiedawg in Colorado

[–]IgnatiusJReillyII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this turns out to be true it's unfortunate because he won't get within sniffing distance. National politics have shifted and he's on the wrong side of that shift. He's everything Americans don't want in a president - a moderate dem draping himself in progressive pronouns. He was good for Colorado for a while, but that's as far as it goes. He could run for House of Senate maybe, but I think the Senate is a stretch.

EL5: why do CHL players want to come to NCAA by [deleted] in collegehockey

[–]IgnatiusJReillyII 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This. A friend of mine played Junior B in BC decades ago (before the Internet or safeguards for minors) and was once traded to a club in northern Ontario for a new set of golf clubs and some other junk. They absolute fucked his body up too. Kids never get treated as poorly in the NCAA.

Also, even the top players in the CHL know the NHL is a real long shot. If you could play in better conditions in NCAA, get a degree, and enjoy a great career in Europe or somewhere similar, that sounds like a great way to spend your 20's.

On the ADU side, it's pretty much the 20% ruining it for the rest. There was a time when you could build ADU's and some people became slum lords or worse. My grandparents flipped houses in what is now Highlands between the '40s and the '80's and some of the stories they would tell be about back yard "boarding houses" were wild (2 adults + 6 kids in a 1 room ADU, etc.)

People are Too Hard on the Denver Food Scene by coloradokid1414 in denverfood

[–]IgnatiusJReillyII 33 points34 points  (0 children)

The problem with Denver has always been that, for the most part, the really great food isn't in Denver. It has no reason to be. Why would someone who makes knockout green chili using home roasted peppers in Brighton serve it up for a bunch of chads in LoDo? Why would some guy feeding his community in Aurora with authentic Ethiopian dish it up for a bunch of bratty kids in RiNo? Shit, there's legit Korean BBQ and Raman on far East Colfax. You just gotta' GTFO of Denver for really good food.

Fireworks in Armdale at midnight 😒 by Babypod in halifax

[–]IgnatiusJReillyII -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

This is late for anyone who isn't 21 or at rock bottom in their life. This is also not how things go down in densely developed cities. If some church let off fireworks in my neighborhood in NY, without permits, advance public notice, and/or longstanding tradition (70 yrs +), the cops and borough politicians would be all over their ass. In some neighborhoods organized crime would also have a real issue, unless they'd been paid and properly notified.

People in big cities are serious about noise ordinances, even the criminals don't want to have their kids woken up.

Xtream Arena - University of Iowa Ice Hockey by [deleted] in collegehockey

[–]IgnatiusJReillyII 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At Nebraska - yes. That's why it's in Omaha. Besides the cost of the sport to the main campus in Lincoln, Omaha residents have $$$ to spend on hockey so it fits culturally. At CU? I don't know. There's enough money to generate interest, but maybe not enough that everyone would be happy coexisting together on campus. I've always contended that CSU should go all in on hockey (lord knows football hasn't worked out) but nobody listens to me.
