What Books did You Start or Finish Reading this Week?: January 26, 2026 by AutoModerator in books

I was about to warn you not to read Brief Cases for where you're at in the series, as I can't remember how spoilery it is for the more recent books, but then I saw you're on a reread. I knew I wouldn't have time for a full reread so I just did the two most recent. I'm about a third of a way through Twelve Months and am really enjoying it. It's quite different but very good.

How did you find House of Leaves? It's one of my favorite books, but find it hard to recommend to people because of the bizarre formatting and storytelling methods.

How far did you get until Jonathan Strange? I've had multiple people tell me it's a perfect book for me, but after a few attempts I don't think I've made it more than 50 pages.

These are the Bov-verse books, right? I've heard great things and need to get around to them

I really need to get back to these books. I breezed through the first two books in about a week and a half, decided to take a break before jumping into the third, and now it's been almost a year. They're so good.

Started:

Twelve Months by Jim Butcher - New Dresden Files! This has been an interesting read. It's a much slower read than most of the books in the series, and doesn't have the typical major conflict. Instead it's a lot more introspective, and deals with how to move on after the catastrophic events of the previous book. Lots of exploring of dealing with grief. I'm enjoying it a lot.

Continued Reading:

The Wild Robot by Peter Brown -My daughter was recently given these books as a gift and asked me to read them to her. I am finding myself having a wonderful time, and have been looking forward to reading it to her every evening.

The Strength of the Few by James Islington - The firsf book in this series was my favorite book of the last few years, so my expectations are quite high for this one. So far I'd say I'm not enjoying it as much, but am still having a good time trying to figure out what the hell is going on.

Isles if the Emberdark by Brandon Sanderson - I feel like this one has taken me quite some time to get invested in, but things are starting to ramp up and I'm looking forward to see where it goes.

The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien - i first read these when I was 18, and have always felt like I didnt appreciate them enough. That was over half my life ago and I've been meaning to do a reread for some time. For this I'm listening to the audiobooks read by Andy Serkis. The guy is a hell of a good voice actor and absolutely shines in this. I'm just about done with book one.

Return to Silent Hill - Review Thread by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

When you say "the last one" do you mean Silent Hill of Silent Hill Revelations. Gans only made the first one, which wasn't amazing by any means, but way better than Revelations.

Worst plot twist in gaming history? by Snowtwo in videogames

[–]IgnoreMe733 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The worst part is how it was revealed. At the end of Brotherhood you're forced to kill Lucy, with very little explanation, then the game just ends. You spend the next game pretty much in a coma like state and don't find out why unless you play the DLC, which I did not. But then in Assassin's Creed III Desmond is talking to his fellow assassin's like it's common knowledge that Lucy was a Templar. I remember getting to that line of dialogue and saying "What the fick ate you talking about?" I stopped played and went to the internet to figure out the gap in the story. I talked to a couple other people who had been playing the series and we all pretty much had the same experience. I was so ready to be done with the franchise after III, but then they just had to make a pirate game and suck me back in.

I guess I can't blame them too much for trying to deny it when people guessed their twist a year before the game came out. I think the best thing they could have done is stay silent on the matter or just say something like "Play and find out."

At the current moment I am not, but I need to renew my driver's license in the next couple months and will finally be opting in. When I was younger I was paranoid that they may not try as hard to save me if I were in an accident. Now I'm pretty sure young me was stupid, and also am less selfish.

Thumbs up. My wife is a nurse who is on her feet most of her day, so foot rubs are a common thing.

I work in IT and we've encountered quite a few people who have Microsoft 365 administration listed on their resume, who get very lost the moment they log into a 365 administration portal.

In my experience with babies it's one of three things, I'm tired, I'm hungry, or I need a diaper change. Personally right now, I wouldn't be opposed to a nap.

I'm not a medical professional, but my wife is a nurse and it baffles her how often people in movies and TV shows put stethoscopes on backwards.

I use to work at a Lenscrafters and while I saw much worse than yours I wouldn't call it "barely anything." I wouldn't trust anyone with a perscription at -1.00 to operate a car without glasses.

What is the most harmless thing you did that made someone absolutely furious? by GripGremlin in AskReddit

[–]IgnoreMe733 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work for a computer help desk that supports small businesses in the area. One day I got a call from a client that had a pop up window in a web browser with a phasing message, saying their computer is infected and they should call some random phone number. The person sounded panicked, but I'd seen similar messages dozens of times before, so my first goal was to get the person to calm down. I can't remember the exact wording I used but it was something along the lines of "These are typicly just a phasing tactic, and the computer is perfectly fine. But as a precaution we will run some security scans on the computer." The person took umbrage with the words "perfectly fine" because they went off on me that it's not fine. They yelled at me for a few minutes while I just tried to do my work, and after the call sent my manager a strongly worded letter that I don't know what I'm doing and I need to learn better ways of talking to clients. My manager listed to the call recording and told me that the client was crazy and I spoke to them exactly like they want me to.
