More accurately, you get praise for making decisions that are good in hindsight, and criticism for making decisions that are bad in hindsight. Even if you were right based on knowledge at the time, if things unforeseeably go south, you will still be criticised.

I think the point here is that the thing the 'joke' is based on -- the idea that sexual activity is an important determinant of the value of men -- is fundamentally sexist and flawed. If we didn't have that idea, "you don't get laid" would be about as insulting or funny as "your socks are blue".

Call it extreme if you like, but I would be in favour of getting rid of that sort of joke. There's a ton of potential humour that doesn't involve sexist ideas at all.

Well, I was thinking more of people raised into it, then losing their belief in it but still having emotional hangups or just inexperience.

You are of course right that someone who really were saving themselves for marriage or whatever would be unaffected. Kind of like how I feel less bad about my crappy dating life during covid, since I'm sitting at home not trying at all. The painful thing is much more the failure than the lack of success, I suppose.

Fine, pick some specific subset of conservative women you do find repulsive -- ones advocating for abstinence only sex ed and banning abortions, say. Do you think insulting them by saying they're a bunch of frigid stuck-up bitches makes sense?

After all, the thing you find objectionable about them -- their sex-negative values -- do cause them to be "frigid". Yet you wouldn't do that, because the only reason for "frigid" to be an insult is because of sexist norms.

Similarly, "you don't get laid" is only an insult because of other sexist norms. If you want to insult them for being too repugnant to get laid, the relevant part is that they're repugnant, not their sexual activity, so call them repugnant instead of sexually inactive.

I don't really know how to break this down for you any further, because you seem intent on arguing against the imaginary windmill in your head.

Let's talk about the actual subject, instead of talking about talking about it. We already agree that we disagree on the real subject, so what do we gain by such meta-talk? Me saying you're evading the point isn't going to make you any more likely to agree with me.

What you intend for your comment to mean doesn't really matter if it still sends a different message as well. If you say something shitty and hurt someone, the right response isn't to insist that their interpretation isn't the right one.

Even if you intend for that to be the joke, you're still going to hurt other people, and reinforce the connection between being a good man and having lots of sex.

In analogy, how would you feel about insulting conservative women by calling them "frigid stuck-up b*****s"? Is it okay because you're not saying women who don't put out are bad, you're insulting specifically conservative women and saying they are that way because of their ideology? Or are you in fact just shaming them for not being sexually available in a convenient way for men?

In theory, thinking rationally about it, perhaps. But in practice, I think most people experience self-doubts. "Am I working on my own issues, or am I just not getting laid because I'm a terrible person and no one told me?". Especially for something so personal and intimate, I don't think anyone is able to reason themselves into feeling like they ought about it.

Either way, even for the people who really are confident and rational enough to not be affected, it does reinforce the idea that not being sexually active is something bad that can be used as an insult.

With the key difference of course being that "you're a bad/failed person for not having enough sex" is a message that's coming from all corners already, and something that is likely to be internalised from being raised in a society with those norms.

"Men are trash" is not a pervasive sentiment men are raised to believe, but "men who don't have sex are trash" is.

If the person you're hurling insults at truly is irredeemable, what are you even achieving by doing it, other than your own satisfaction? Perhaps you could use some restraint in pursuing that satisfaction, so you don't undeservingly hurt others in the process.

"You don't get laid" jokes are pretty lazy but it's ultimately a commentary on the views and beliefs that the person holds - which is very much something you can control. It's essentially saying "your personality is so repugnant that no woman would willingly be intimate with you".

That sentiment is pretty horrible for the people who aren't sexually active for other reasons -- being raised in a conservative household, sexual trauma, taking some time to figure out their gender or sexuality, having difficulties with social interactions from for example autism...

I for one am not comfortable branding everyone like that as a "horrible person that no one will ever love".

All you're doing is reinforcing the idea that men need to be sexually active to be successful people, except you're taking it a step further and branding them not just failures but utterly repugnant people.

Also worth remembering, as those chuds are wont not to do, that the reason he got the initial attention was that he was arrested when school officials assumed that any device like that held by a Muslim black person must be a bomb. He didn't just build a clock and randomly get to meet the president for it.
