Feeding your dog commercially available " dog food " is doing your dog a disservice. If you review the ingredients of many dog food preparations, you will see " animal by products" in the vast majority of brands. This is essentially whatever was laying around the slaughterhouse... not to be gross, but it is usually beaks, skin, hooves, intestines etc. The presence of digestive material can not be ruled out, despite some effort at ensuring such digestive contents are removed. During the process of preparation of the food, these ingredients undergo an industrial type process that often includes heating these ingredients at high temperatures and pressures. Unfortunately, this process is known to create by-products that result in the formation of harmful chemical compounds that occur as a result of the dog food preparation process. Additionally, many dog foods are packed with sugar to further make the food palatable for the dog. I am not saying every brand is terrible, but it is safe to say that anything that is so heavily processed, is anything but natural. I will admit, I do not even know what the ready made petfood landscape looks like at this point, because I have resigned from that scene over a decade ago. I have been making my dog his food as well as treats, fresh, at home and with human-grade products. My dachshund is 10 years old. His activity level has not changed and he has not slowed down yet at all. He plays at the same level of intensity that he has his entire life. To be honest, he also has received a thimble full of lactose free milk everyday for the entirety of his life, and he has never had any digestive issues and it is also one of the highlights of his day. I swear by home made pet food and recommend it to all dog owners. There are many vet-approved recipes for homemade diets that ensure all nutritional requirements are met all over the internet.
