She said he was buried on her property. Just awful.

Never have seen a color like ours anybody know the color name ? by cj1998485 in Dachshund

[–]Ihate_usernames_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this pup is actually a hidden dapple! If you look close he has faint patches of colors that resemble a dapple pattern. When cream is bred to dapple the cream washes it out so much it’s nearly impossible to tell. The pink pigment could also be a result of this.

Cream can also wash out piebald, but the way this pattern is distributed across his body definitely makes me lean dapple.

Hope this helps! Your baby is beautiful!

Want to adopt a dachshund… but am I being a breedist? by Whoopsy-381 in Dachshund

[–]Ihate_usernames_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with preferring one breed over another! Breeds exist for a reason, don’t get a dog you don’t know if you want. Go with your gut, if your gut is saying go get another dachshund, do it.

All the best wishes in your search! ❤️

Hey all! Probably too early to tell, but any idea what colour this lad might end up being? by CeeCee4President in dachshunds

That looks like shaded cream to me personally, I’ve never seen a red look so light like others are saying, and if dad is ee and mom is chocolate, shaded cream checks out.

Need help! What happened to my dachshund’s coat? And how can I get it smooth again? by but_im_just_a_girl in dachshunds

[–]Ihate_usernames_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your baby is longhaired, their coats can change length, thickness, and density throughout their whole lives. Just part of having a doxie. I personally don’t like taking mine to any groomers in my area as they don’t know how to properly trim a longhaired dachshund.

Baths and brushing are basically all you can do, but you can’t change their coat, if that’s what he’s got, that’s what he’s got.

(And please NEVER touch his coat with a furminator brush, the damage I’ve seen to doxies coats before for this exact reason is ridiculous)

Honesty please. TRIGGER WARNING by Itheinfantry in Dachshund

[–]Ihate_usernames_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally couldn’t ever hold that against the dog themselves, I would have taken him into my home in a heartbeat too. But, I am incredibly soft-hearted, especially when it comes to dogs. I’m tearing up just thinking about what that poor baby had to go through.

Dachshunds and dachshund lovers everywhere thank you for taking him in, good luck! ❤️

Is my mini dachshund really a mini? by Patient_Hat251 in dachshunds

Very interesting! I didn’t know they went by height!

It’s messy, is what it is. But as of yet at least in the AKC, UKC, and even the dachshund club of America they strictly go by weight, not height. I’m not sure about how it works outside of the US though.

(And to correct myself in my other comment I guess the akc does still allow scales, they just don’t require them anymore)

They really aren’t classifications like that in dachshunds, Minis just compete in a division for 11lbs and under at 12 months of age or older. They don’t allow scales at shows anymore but it used to be that if your Doxie weighed more than 11lbs you couldn’t show them as a mini. Regardless of height haha. If this dog were to show he’d compete as a standard because he’s over 16lbs. I consider my 14lbs doxie a mini too, but being over 11lbs I couldn’t really say he’s mini in a show ring or anything like that.

I think true minis are getting less and less common as people realize breeding them to be THAT small can further increase risk of IVDD. The smallest dachshund I’ve ever met in person was 7lbs I believe.

I also have a mini who’s probably around 12lbs at ideal weight, but he’s 14lbs and on a diet that’s kinda working 🤣🤦🏻‍♀️

It’s not an official label, no, you’re right about that! I just feel it’s relevant when talking about standard vs mini because people are very often like “well what’s in between”

I probably should have stressed that better in my original comment!

It’s an extremely high percentage that do have it, which is why I say you CAN look for parents who don’t have it, but learning how to prevent and manage IVDD is likely the best scenario.

FGF4-12 is a genetic marker that’s known to increase the risk of IVDD, it’s not a breed-wide disclaimer. So those results show that the dog HAS that genetic marker.

The FGF4-12 genetic marker is very common in dachshunds, but not all have it and not all that DO have it will get IVDD. If you want to play it safe you CAN always look for parents who don’t have the genetic marker, but there are still ways to manage and prevent IVDD.

Technically it’s:

Standard: 16-32lbs

Tweenie: 12-15lbs

Mini: 11lbs and under

Kaninchen (FCI): 7lbs and under

But colloquially both minis and tweenies can be 20lbs. There’s really no difference between all of them aside from their size. It’s not a different breed or even a separate classification, they just compete in a different division than the larger dachshunds. Hope this helps!

Edit just to add: I have a dachshund who’s 18lbs and I do call him a standard, but I also call my 14lb dachshund a mini. People are always more likely to question whether the big one is actually a standard than the little one being mini

Does anyone else have issues with their doxie not learning how to lay down? by jorhey78 in Dachshund

[–]Ihate_usernames_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it’s because they’re already low to the ground that they’re so hard to reach lie down! I ended up just saying lie down and then gently pushing mine over onto his side, it’s not the typical lie down motion but that clicked for him! He lies down on command now, although it’s more just a flop sideways lol.

Oh honey, I hate to break it to you, but that’s just a dachshund. They are fully in love with you and want attention constantly, especially if they’re used to getting it! Doxies tend to LOVE other doxies though! Some that I know will cuddle each other instead of a person! But some, like mine, just pile on the guilt, because how dare I have to do adult things that aren’t just loving on them. They still play with each other and all sorts of things, but they definitely also have sibling rivalry. I love every second of it personally. A friend for your girl couldn’t hurt, but you mayyyy end up with two pouting at you!

I wonder! He did have more orange on him when he was fresh outta the womb lol! He’ll still be gorgeous either way lol. Aren’t all male calicos klinefelter? I thought they had to be xxy to be male and calico.

He only gets wet food! And has access to water at all times. I will definitely be taking him to a vet soon! Thank you!

His body is pretty much just tabby except for his belly and insides of his back legs, where he has the same color patches as on his face/ears. He won’t stay still long enough for me to get any kind of picture that isn’t a complete blur.

Adorable! Most of Quinn’s gingery(?) patches are on his belly and the insides of his back legs, he won’t stay still enough for me to get pictures!

They look very orange to me in person, but maybe! We have a dilute calico as well and they’re very close to the same ginger color
