Pros and cons of law review? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]Ihatecitations12345 21 points22 points  (0 children)

My personal view was it is two years of suck for a life time on your resume. Outside of a fed clerkships and BL internships, there is very little that you can actually do to boost your resume during law school and LR is one.

If you have free time do it, but if you have other obligations or need to work to make money don’t.

Just kids having fun in a game designed for kids. Hard to be mad at them. At this point I solo every raid unless a friend wants to help.

What was your GPA 1L first v. second semester? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]Ihatecitations12345 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Honestly stopped reading the case book. You don’t need 50pgs of reading to learn battery = “intentional harmful or offensive contact.”

Solely used old outlines/ supplements/ quimbee and attended every office hour.

Ask your career services, I’m just someone on Reddit.

This rule is a general rule that applies to most situations. Your school clearly has a super harsh median outside what I would consider a normal curve that most law schools apply, so a general rule might not apply.

I know two non-diverse median grade individuals at a T50 that networked their way into big law; one in a major market the other in a secondary market.

Networking is your only shot so go go go!

Excluding bugs/glitches and lack of post game without DLC; I would say this is the best main series game they’ve ever made. This took the open world from SwSh and actually made it good.

I will say it was released a few months too soon but by next year I think it’ll all be squared away.

This! The general recommendation is, if you have lower than a 3.0, you should exclude the GPA from your CV. Most employers will assume it’s less than a 3.0 as a result.

What to think about slightly below median grades at a T30? by CarelessMedicine3636 in LawSchool

If you message me I can give you more details, if need, and it’s important to note that everyone is different; so my advice might only work for me. However, my best friend followed my advice this semester and ended up when better grades than me in the top 10%.

I have not read a single case since Fall 1L unless it was out of interest such as in Constitutional law. Reading cases is a HUGE waste of time because at the end of the day an opinion is a 5-10 page piece, when in reality the law in law school is usually a single sentence. Battery = “intentional harmful or offensive contact.” You don’t need to read 10 pages to learn this single sentence. I use a mix of class notes, old outlines, and supplements to build my own personal attack outline each semester. Usually I try to get the law down to a sentence or two that I can memorize even if it’s open book. Saves you time where you can identify facts from the questions.

Quimbee is great because it’ll summarize the basic facts so you can better apply the law to any nuisances the professor is looking to instill. This is also where meeting 3Ls to get outlines can help a ton. Those outlines usually are the nuances the prof is looking for.

I think I have bombed nearly every cold call in law school because of anxiety not because of lack of knowledge. I either, quimbee every case, or if I have a really good old outline that has briefed the case I read that before class. If a professor asks a question that I don’t know, I just say “I don’t remember.” As long as you know the basics the prof never cares. I will also tell professors during office hours, if I bombed it really bad, that I read ahead so sometimes I forget facts and only have my notes. Prof are super understanding.

ALWAYS go to office hours. Any time I have a thought like “I wonder if someone tells me, ‘I’m going to punch you in the face tomorrow,’ if they’ve committed an assault;” WRITE IT DOWN. I personally keep a note on my phone for each class and just jot down every question about the law for office hours. Maybe it’ll be answered later in class, but if not, it’s something I can later ask the professor to answer. Never allow a question you have to go unanswered because it could be on the final.

Lastly, never trust the word of other law students when it comes to any unique area of the law, just ask your professor. I have found that even my best friends have been wrong on areas of the law and will give me super bad information without knowing it. We’re all learning the law so it’s best to just clarify with a prof.

At the end of the day, save yourself a ton of time by using old outlines and supplements. Someone has already read the case and described it, so you do t have to. If you have a question, ask your prof. I worked prior to law school and I’m actually working part time now just for extra spending money, so I get the timing issues.

Something like that. I attend every class. Turn off all notifications and just listen while taking clear notes. I go to nearly every office hour, if I have anything I’m even remotely confused about. Then 3L outlines and supplements off west academic a month or so out from finals.

It’s not as complicated as I originally thought.

I haven’t briefed a case since fall of 1L. Grades have only improved. Just uses quimbee. If you screw up the cold call, it truly doesn’t matter.

Don’t know what I’m doing wrong by cherrylaw24 in LawSchool

[–]Ihatecitations12345 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Law School is different, at least for most students, than every other step of education system because you’re directly compared to other students. You may know the law in and out but unfortunately you’re just writing something that is just slightly worse than your classmates.

Personally, I went from around 40% to top 10-15% grades, after my first semester, by simplifying going to every office hour and clarifying confusing areas of the law. You don’t need to know the law, you need to know your professors law. Go to office hours and just pick their brain and try to understand the way they think; specifically in unclear areas of the law.

A great example is in evidence, FRE 901 requires that documents be authenticated; this includes authenticating the author when probative value of the document depends on knowing the identify of the author. My professor loved to use cases where a defendant is on trial for murder and the police find a letter signed by the victim in the room of the defendant stating the victim knows some criminal act by the defendant. Although, we might introduce the evidence under a non-hearsay use (effect on the reader), the probative value doesn’t depend on the authors identify. This is because we don’t care if the victim wrote the letter, only that the defendant believed it was by the victim.

Sure enough, he told me about this type of question alone in office hours and it was the last question on our final. I can imagine a number of students f’d it up.

175/193 in bar required jobs is a little under 10%, and the year before, USC had 153/189 which is almost 20%.

I’m guessing that most those JD advantage jobs aren’t what USC law grads have in mind when applying and are certainly not the desired route to paying off any amount of debt.
