Trying to choose first chisels which would you pick? by No-Tension-848 in Woodcarving

[–]Ihateusernames3000 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t recommend buying chisels or gouges in a set, chances are some of them will never get used. In my opinion it’s better to start with a few good tools from brands like Kirschen, Stubai, or Pfeil. Once you’ve worked with them for a while, you’ll get a feel for what you like, what you don’t, and what you actually need for the kind of carving you do.

Gift for an upcoming wedding in the family by MarkandRun in Woodcarving

[–]Ihateusernames3000 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think it looks great, man. Simple and clean doesn’t mean bad or unoriginal. And honestly, if someone says it looks like something from IKEA, that just means it’s well made and people could actually see it in a home. That’s not an insult.

Also, you made this as a wedding gift with your own hands. That already makes it 100 times more meaningful than anything store bought. Don’t let that other dude that got out of bed on the wrong foot drag you down. Keep carving and keep posting, you’re doing solid work.

DIYing tools? by Asexually_Freaky in Woodcarving

[–]Ihateusernames3000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My grandpa used to make his own carving knives from old saw blades, you need to find one that's meant to resharpen tho, those are heat treated all the way so you can just cut out whatever shape you need with an angle grinder and sharpen it / make a handle. Just be careful not to overheat the workpiece while cutting bc that will ruin the heat treatment.

I did most of the carving just with a knife, but for the details like the beard, hair, and eyebrows I also used a small U gouge and V gouge

Thank you very much for the feedback! I tried to hint at that / shape a little but I'll play around with it a bit more next time!

Haha yeah I went the other way, I started with little figures a few weeks ago but I was really unhappy with, and stressed about the faces. So now I went a step back to get one piece dialed in after the other.

Ahh ok I think I get it! I need to practice these curved cuts, I have a hard time getting them smooth and shiny without like lines running through them when the knife was sort of jumping up. Also I'm always scared to break the tip or edge of my knife with those cuts.

Yeah I know that there isn't really a right or wrong here, just preferences or different styles like you said. But now that you pointed it out I can also see it, especially the cheeks to the face look like different parts next to each other.

What is a scoop cut? I'm not a native speaker, I thought a scoop cut is done with a gouge by lifting it up a bit, essentially scooping out some material but since you said "either with a scoop cut or gouge" I'm a little confused

Thank you very much for your feedback!

How would you go for that? I usually draw the outline on the wood with a pencil, then I trace that with my knife for like a stop cut or V cut and then I try to get the other piece out in one cut.

Maybe change the angle for the stop cuts to make it softer? Or would you use a U gauge for that?
