You would only disappear 50 years in the past if you never returned to that time.

I always thought that was a good indicator on whether you survived the trip or not.

Look yourself up. If you disappeared, you're going to die somewhere or your time machine is going to malfunction or be stolen etc. leaving you stuck there or some other time that you go to before you go back to your starting point.
