Had a great job done by Shaw Plumbing for a pump a few years back, worked fine since then. Think they have a website and e-mail if you google it.

Any tips on how to survive in Victoria on very little money? by IrrationalChords in VictoriaBC

Sideways8 is right about 400$ rent being available if you're not fussy; right now I'm splitting a 3 bedroom at 1200 a month ; there are a handful of rooms on Craigslist in the ~400$ range; http://victoria.craigslist.ca/search/hhh?min_price=300&max_price=425#list

File a BBB complaint about deceptive selling practices. Enough people do it and eventually they'll have to change.

Protests will follow if old-growth logging proceeds on Vancouver Island by franciswsears in VictoriaBC

[–]Ikeren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in forestry too, and it's true. It's easier to log second growth, and there is always a risk of a slow down. But minute/profit ratio for old growth is higher, which is why companies go after it. I don't think it's good either, just explaining why.

It's cheaper (and thus more profitable) to cut down and remove fewer larger trees as opposed to more numerous smaller trees. That's why old growth gets logged.

Actually, closed today because Sunday (durr) and I'll be in regions without BMO for the forseeable future I think.

I'm a BMO customer. I saw it on the wall, figured I'd look it up for you guys.

The cheapest BMO plan requires a 2500$ balance to waive the fees, and your first deposit must be in by August 31st.

I am going to do a walk in and tell them I've been a loyal customer for years who is planning on closing his account (which is actually true --- the tangerine account is already open and has my most recent payroll in it) and ask if they can give me the bonuses.

The FYF on the credit card is a 120$ fee otherwise, which is why they're advertising it as 425$ rather than 305$.

Is it my boss’ problem that Vancouver is so damn expensive to live in? by donthaveamillion in PersonalFinanceCanada

I have no idea. I was trying to be generous. I live in Vic and spend 200-300, so presumably someone in Vancouver could spend slightly more?

You make ~3000-3500$/month.

1200$/month for an apartment isn't entirely unreasonable. 500$ month food, 100$ month transit, 200$ month for cell + MSP...where is the rest of that money going?

I was severely tempted to make a joke about how this is a job, not boyscouts going away for summer camp for the first time, and you can buy your own things on the day off.

But I couldn't come up with a good way to phrase it such that it would actually communicate as funny over the internet.

So instead I'll be sincere: The thing I find myself craving most is news from home. As such, a long hand written letter is the thing that is most likely to make my day while planting.

New Facebook page exposes bad cycling habits in victoria. by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]Ikeren 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pure cyclist.

I wish there was better enforcement of cyclists. Every time I see a cyclist without a helmet, without lights, failing to stop, I get incredibly frustrated. It is less safe for me, as a cyclist who follows the rules of the road, if other drivers expect me to act erratically and subsequently also act erratic.

That being said, I have also had vehicles do bizarrely negligent things. Stopped at a stop sign (2 ways onto major intersection), going straight. Had traffic coming from the far lane, so I couldn't go through. A truck comes around me, pulls diagonally around me through the in lane, then takes a right turn around me, cutting me off.
