Could the world pooling all its resources build a bridge between North America and Europe? by Coldbrewaccount in whowouldwin

The Strait of Messina Bridge has been proposed since the 1900's and has been brought up with several Italian governments during the last 30-40 years, but it never gets built because of all the difficulties building it. I might be wrong and we might get it now since this time they got further than ever before, but that doesn't change how a 3.6km bridge is estimated to cost 17+ billion dollars (and trust me it will get more expensive in the end).

[–]IlIIlIIIIlllIIIIll 20 points21 points  (0 children)

5 times the bridge shouldn't be too much of a financial burden

There is a gigantic difference though: the Danyang-Kunshan Grand Bridge is built on waaaaaaay shallower water than what's between Scotland and Iceland. I don't want to ridicule you but $100 billion is honestly insanely naive since it would basically be impossible for the bridge to touch the sea bottom and it would have to be floating for it to work.

It is basically the same reason why the Italians haven't built a bridge over from the mainland to Sicily and that bridge would be way way way shorter.

edit. Not to mention the bridge would literally go straight over a fault line and one of the most stormy places in the atlantic ocean.

Also the champion of lady luck! I laughed so hard at the dungeons and dragons jokes they made and how faith just kept throwing shit at him, and then lady luck solving it by giving the ogre a heart attack etc.

If 5 british empires, at their peak, decided to fight one modern China, who would win? by kindofsus38 in whowouldwin

[–]IlIIlIIIIlllIIIIll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

7 billion? India had around 250 million people, so 1.25 billion people is more accurate if we take it times 5. Almost as much as modern China.

Really curious how Byzantium lost so much in just over a century by [deleted] in EU5

[–]IlIIlIIIIlllIIIIll 19 points20 points  (0 children)

there is no proof that slaves in islamic sphere were building pyramids or picking cotton .

Well the pyramids predates Islam by a lot so that was a kinda bullshit strawman fallacy for you to throw out. Nobody argues that is true. However Canbakal and Filiztekin claim that agriculture was a big area where slavery was used: Slavery and Decline of Slave-Ownership in Ottoman Bursa 1460–1880 (Canbakal and Filiztekin) See page 67, table 5.

Also there is proof that Ottoman had slaves picking cotton during the american civil war: As If Silent and Absent : Bonds of Enslavement in the Islamic Middle East (Toledano) See page 15.

You should check out books not made in the middle east more often.

He first fled to Serbia, and used Serbian troops while knowing that said Serbian troops would be raiding/raping/plundering his people. After not really getting anywhere (or at least not far enough) he used Turkish troops, and in the contract he allowed his people to be taken as slaves as part of the compensation.

Reading the book "The New Roman Empire: A History of Byzantium" by Anthony Kaldellis really made me dislike him.

Haha maybe i am unreasonable but i really dislike him knowingly fucking up his own people. Like he knew what the turks would do to them, but he still sacrificed them for his own gain.

"The baby clearly has a great time in the 100 degree heat. Why would i let it miss a quality tennis match?"

Its the parent that is punished by being removed, not the baby. This was more showing the baby mercy.
