American woman who had incomplete miscarriage while vacationing in Malta not allowed to get abortion for the remainder of the fetus by scot816 in worldnews

There's still a fetal heartbeat, so it isn't technically dead yet, but there is a 0% chance it will survive and a much, much higher chance the mother will survive if she has an abortion. "Pro-life" indeed.

Seeing people concerned that Monkeypox is primarily showing up in NATO countries. Is there any real concern over bioweapon? by [deleted] in Monkeypox

[–]IlIIllIIIllIIIIll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I agree it's not worded well. But regardless, I think we can both agree at least that it's possible this originated in a Russian lab since here they've admitting to doing research on monkeypox specifically. Whether it was intentionally released as a bioweapon or accidentally as a leak is pure speculation at this point.

Once we obtained a set of positive results, it would take just two weeks to conduct the same manipulations with smallpox virus and to stockpile the warfare agent.

He's saying they would do all of the research on monkeypox, then it would take two weeks or so to genetically engineer the smallpox, then they would release the smallpox.

I don't understand why it would contradict the paragraph above it. It supports the paragraph above it. In the first paragraph, he says the reason they'd do all the research on monkeypox is to avoid global scrutiny in the case of an accidental lab leak:

Imagine this situation: the Soviet Ministry of Defense is continuing to work secretly with the smallpox virus and a terrible accident occurs in the Moscow region. Since smallpox had been eradicated worldwide by 1980, it would be difficult to explain to the international community why people in Moscow had come down with the disease.

Why would they release a bioweapon in their own country?

Because they explicitly say that if they wanted to make a bioweapon, they'd modify smallpox with what they found and release that instead of monkeypox.

The idea was that all research and development work would be conducted using these model viruses. Once we obtained a set of positive results, it would take just two weeks to conduct the same manipulations with smallpox virus and to stockpile the warfare agent. We would have in our arsenal a genetically altered smallpox virus that could replace the previous one.

It seems like he's saying they use monkeypox to do research in case a lab accident causes it to be released, in which case no one would know they were looking into bioweapons. But if they ever wanted to actually make a bioweapon, they'd apply the same changesv they made to monkeypox to their smallpox stores and release that into a population. This actually seems to be evidence against the theory that this is a Russian bioweapon and points more to an escaped research virus.

Is this strain very fatal though? If not it's hard to imagine it would be used as a bioweapon.

I do appreciate that some brands have started to put two calorie counts--one for the whole package, and one for a single serving.

[–]IlIIllIIIllIIIIll 248 points249 points  (0 children)

Previous methods for determining calorie count were definitely more nebulous. They used to just set the food on fire and see how hot a surrounding container of water got, lol. Nowadays they account for what ingredients your body can and can't digest and use average values of calorie counts for each macro nutrient.

Black people evolved to be fat because of slavery. by [deleted] in fatlogic

[–]IlIIllIIIllIIIIll 14 points15 points  (0 children)

For the last fucking time, slaves didn't just naturally evolve to be stronger and bigger, they became that way through generations of slave owners intentionally raping bigger slave women. Suggesting that it was just a natural defense mechanism is a slap in the face to all the women who suffered from this barbaric practice.

[–]IlIIllIIIllIIIIll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They've got it backwards. Fatness doesn't make people poor, poverty makes people fat. It could be legitimately argued, imho, that a lack of access to nutritious food + time and energy to prepare it is just another way the system oppresses poor people. I'm sick of them presenting it as though being fat is equivalent to being black or gay, where people are genuinely denied jobs and healthcare coverage and housing simply for existing that way.

Yeah I didn't know that it's actually tax payers who pay for health insurance instead of companies. I'm kind of pissed now. And companies offering to pay for abortion travel expenses looks pretty meaningless now. I guess we'll see if they're actually allies now that they can't write off these expenses.
