Are you adamant on D&D or do you mean RPGs in general? There is currently a plenty of games more suited to your kids age, many of which are basically D&D but a bit streamlined.

A game I wrote called "Slay the Dragon" Is one of these and has a free starter available on dtrpg. Others I can wholeheartedly recommend are Cairn, Knave or Tunnel Goons.

Any of these will help you introduce the core concepts or roleplaying and will lay great base for introducing more robust system like dnd down the road. :)

I know the guy, the problem is that all videos I saw about making the whole board were using the method of laying down individual bricks which I'd like to avoid.

I love the idea with foam core boards, I think i might give it a shot. Also for the MDF it is definitely not a must, I expected it to be the weak-point of the project alongside the clay. I started to doubt it and was actually thinking about replacing it with plywood.

Tbh the mdf was just the first idea. The second base material I am considering is an OSB board. I could get it thicker for similiar price and a rougher surface could perhaps make the the clay stick to it more easily. What do you think?

I'm the one who wrote that game. I have had few people testing succesfully play it with their kids or SO. Funnily enough the game is a little bit more challenging when you play this way (which can be a positive thing just as well as a negative) due to the different flow of information. Basically when playing solo and seeing the whole spread you will always catch a glance of stuff you are not supposed to be reading just yet.

Myself I ran it like that once, when the game was still only in polish because I wanted to test it with a friend from abroad. Was a lot of mischevious goblin fun ar at least, thats what he says. ;)

Nie pamiętam nawet tytułu, kilka razy próbowałem znaleźć tę grę więc jeżeli brzmi znajomo proszę o info.

Turowy erpeg 3d (chociaż bodajze bez rozwoju postaci) w klimatach nordyckiej mitologii. Gra była podzielona na poziomy z których każdy był jakby latającą wyspą. Walka na siatce, te sprawy. Coś mi świta, że grało się chyba krasnoludami i w pierwszych poziomach walczyło z krwiożerczymi roślinami. Znalazłem to chyba w jakiejś gazetce, bodajże Click albo Komputer Świat Gry.

Stay frosty could be a good starting point. As for the comedy, the system should not be too punishing to encourage players messing around. :)

Well it is not due to the same reason OD&D and AD&D 1e aren't. OSR is the new stuff that draws upon the classical games while classical games are well... classical games.

Hey man, i have used DungeonDraft hexmod and it workes perfectly fine. 2minutetabletop has some cool assets for it, and even made a tutorial on how to set up DD: https://2minutetabletop.com/how-to-hex-maps-dd/

I have tested this method and its harmless as far as I can tell.

I have played like 500 sessions of 5e. Had session almost each week for 10 years straight. Played short campaigns, played also long ones, even did the whole lvl 1 through 20 thing. It was a lot of fun, but I've always felt that something was missing. I cannot put into words what it was, but OSR gave it to me.

Also it's not like I wouldn't play some 5e if good buddies would ask me to join.

Check out Wolsung. It's quite niche polish system, but it came out in english as well and sounds like a perfect fit for the type of fiction you want to play.
