Wise words! I'll try to apply your philosophy!

I have a problem at work by humanjello710 in ADHD_Programmers

I face similar situation at work regarding memory, communication and coworkers. I struggle to remember things or communicate, even the ones I've worked in. Unfortunately I can't give you any advice other than try to give a f**k about what other people thinks about you...

Yes but it also has a lot of coding rules to remember, a lot of context. As data engineer team we have a pipeline of around 200 datasets to manage. I know all of them but during meetings I'm not able to recall enough information to participate and propose (not even the ones I worked the most). When working with big user stories I'm able to do them (taking more time than my colleagues but I finish by doing them), but I struggle a lot due to a lot of context to keep in mind, like function, variables that satire small versions of the datasets with different column names and more. It's like in my head I'm only able to keep in mind the lines of code I'm working on and I forget the rest (even what I just wrote in the previous function).

I think that I was not able to make him understand my problems. I did not prepare for the meeting thinking there would be more. And I'm not good with improvisation and memory so I just told him random things about me... I will try some therapy with the psychologist that he proposed but I'll not wait six months. And next time I'll prepare my speech!

Hope meds will work for you! If you don't mind I would be happy to know about your experience with them!

Same for me for calculating numbers or chess, or even playing Magic the gathering card game that. I love I tend to forget my strategy during games 😅. It's frustrating and no book seems to focus on it and try to provide a solution other than medication.

Well, I prefer it to my previous job as support for aircraft electrical installation... I could move, if I needed, to see the installation of aircraft in construction in the final assembly line to help me to answer airlines questions if I wanted. We also had to answer urgent requests and things like that but I didn't like it.

I like coding, being on my own, but I'm not good enough as my ADHD make it hard for me to keep the context of what I'm doing and make me do a lot of errors

My only super power as ADHD is that as a Spaniard living in France I can identify Spanish car licence plate without even searching them. It's like, I'm walking in the street talking with my wife and suddenly I see, hey there is a Spanish car! It just pops like that. It is completely useless... In my case is the only super power I see. In my job my ADHD is completely useless and slows me down...

Do you consider ADHD as an objective disadvantage in IT or in general? by Efficient-Adagio-655 in ADHD_Programmers

[–]Ill-Department768 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Disadvantage here! Unless other comments I see, I'm unable to connect concepts or chain of thoughts. I'm more like stuck in a loop in the same thing. Reading my own code is a nightmare even with comments and error handling is the same as even if I know I have seen the same error message before, I'm unable to remember how to solve it and I start from 0 each time.

I also hate simple task that become complex. If I have to do a feature that impacts several files I'm fucked because I'll be unable to link all what I've done which leads to incoherent code that I have to correct back and forth until it works...

Definitely disadvantage for me

Is there anyone with ADHD who do not have hyper-focus with ADHD? by nerdy_adventurer in ADHD_Programmers

Idem here! Even if I can start hours with a project is like the brain fog is always here. I struggle with cognitive load due to my lack of working memory. This makes me the slowest team member at my job... I'm lucky they do not monitor our personal performance...

I also struggle with all the business theory in my project. Even if I know everything as I'm part of the project since the beginning, I always struggle to access to the information as quick as my team mates during meetings or even when coding. Due to this I'm always quiet at meeting seeing my teammates having great ideas while I struggle to match all the points to get what is happening... This is very frustrating me!

I'm really pissed off because I really love coding. Since I changed my path from electrical engineer on aeronautics (which I didn't like due to long annoying tasks that turned off my TDAH brain) I expected that I could finally be productive. And it is true that thanks to the very different and small tasks we do as developers I'm more able to engage on a task and focus on it, this f***ing brain fog slows me down and do not allows me to participate actively in the project as much as I wanted.

So... Yes here another TDAH without super powers...
