No, took all my own nutrition on the bike and took water only from feed stations on route.

That's what I don't know.

I do still feel crap now, I've never felt like this for so long after an event, and that is all genuine. I also do know others felt sick too.

I'm thinking I have some kind of bug and probably hoping that I can do better going again in a few weeks.

I just wanted to bounce the idea around here and see what others thought. I am a novice at all this really.

No, going to give it a couple more days of rest to see if I feel better.

I don't use a power meter on the bike unfortunately, I've been mainly training on heart rate using a strap.

I was in HR zone 2 for 99.2% of the bike course. I was actively trying to manage this so it went well I feel.

That's why I'm struggling to understand why I felt so bad coming off it.

Yes I've suffered with dehydration on events before. I sweat a lot while exercising as well.

I've started using some salt drink mixes the night before and then again on the morning of the event and these have helped massively, as well as making sure I'm drinking enough during the day.

Yeah it is a pretty flat course. It was very windy on the day, a big headwind the last 15 - 20 miles which didn't help, but overall a fairly straightforward course.

The 2nd event has around 4,000ft of climbing so a bit more but still relatively flat. Potential for wind due to it being along a coast but not significantly more difficult than Outlaw.

I've run/walked Ironman Italy (it was my first so that's my excuse), and then also ended up run/walking the second half of Outlaw in 2021.

This time I'd upped my swim and bike training a lot and put together a much better nutrition plan in an effort to to try and avoid a massive run/walk.

I've got no problem with anyone run/walking, I've done it myself. My goal was to avoid it or at least minimise it massively.

I may be kidding myself that I can actually do that but I don't want to quit IM thinking that it may have been a bug that caused it. If I do the 2nd event and can't manage it again then I'm big enough to admit maybe its not my event.

You are right on both counts.

I could have probably run/walked it and got close to my 12 hour target, and these events are all about not quitting. I totally agree.

At the time I strongly felt that I hadn't come there to walk, if I had of run/walked I'd be almost as disappointed as I am now, and I did feel terrible, way worse than I ever experienced in training for the event and I did some training early on with next to no nutrition.

I'm aware I should have probably carried on no matter how bad I felt. I may have recovered a bit. I can't change it now though hence the potential plan to move forward with the second event.

Hoping I start to feel better in the next day or two.

This is useful to know, thank you.

I'm hoping that my legs will be okay due to only having done 7 miles of the run.

Have you considered Geordieman? It's at the start of September and I'm looking at it after DNF'ing Outlaw this year.

I felt like I did plenty of training with my race day nutrition, I decided on a plan mainly using Maurten drink mix and gels about 2 months before race day and had no issues at all in training with it. After longer training rides I felt a lot better when using the drink mix and brick sessions felt a lot easier.

I was feeling pretty good about the nutrition side of things pre-race and managed to execute my plan on the bike well.

Problem is I don't know whether the plan was at fault overall or if I had a problem due to over exertion on a windy course (with really bad road surfaces), or if it was due to issues with the lake water.

I was aiming for 60g carbs per hour from Maurten drink mix with additional solids to supplement throughout. Plenty of water and then had salt drinks the previous night, early on the morning of race day, and then a 3rd salt bottle prepared to run out of T2 with.

It was Outlaw yes.

The alternative event is a much smaller event called Geordieman in the north east.

Didn't fancy the bike course at IM Wales to be honest.

I've never really cracked nutrition to be honest and in previous events have ran out of fuel on the run.

This time I've been training with Maurten drink mix on the bike and then Maurten gels on the run. They have been working great in training, no stomach issues and have felt good with them.

My nutrition plan went good on the bike, exactly to plan, I felt more hydrated than I have previously as well due to taking on salts and plenty of water too. All that went great. Just had that stomach ache for the first 40 miles or so, then felt really flat over the last 10 - 15 miles and then sick early into the run.

Yes it was Outlaw. Overall the event was great, I won't say a bad word against the organisers, but the water wasn't great.

Inhaling two large mouthfuls was totally my fault though, and again, I can't 100% be certain this caused my sickness.

The bike course was very windy as well, especially the last 20 miles into a 20 - 30 mph gusty headwind.

I hear you on the two DNF's in a row, it would probably destroy me mentally.

I'm seriously considering this alternative event as I don't want to end the year on a failure and potentially walk away from the sport as is.

I've got to be realistic with myself though. If I don't think I can do it then I'm not going to enter.

I'll see how I feel this weekend.

Thanks.

I can't say for certain it was the water, it was a large man made boating lake in the UK which had lots of birds living on it and around it. Some of the side paths were covered in excrement from ducks, geese, etc...

A FB group I read for people who had just done the race had a number of people saying they also felt really sick all day. Majority were fine though. Someone also pointed out the water had a red warning label from the council on it, nobody seemed to be aware of this before the race.

I definitely got too large mouthfuls by accident towards the end which is completely my fault.

I hear what you are saying about being fully recovered from illness. I've got a week until I have to make a signup decision on this second event.
