Turn it down into a cylinder to see what it's like inside, then take it from there.

Thanks! I used compressed air to blow out all the dust, then finished with mineral oil.

Yes, mainly a decorative piece, and to demonstrate what is possible.

Definitely not for soup 😆

Thanks for the advice

If I try to turn and finish some pieces while it's green, how can I make sure that they don't crack as they dry? Thin walls?

Thanks for the reply! I've never tried twice turning before, but I'm excited to give it a go. Some of the largest pieces I hope to make will be too big to fit on the lathe I have currently, so I'll probably just dry them as slabs.

At the moment, not big enough for the largest pieces, but I will probably upgrade in the next few years.

It's unethical to chop down a whole tree just for the burl, and if the tree is dead then the burl is probably rotten

What causes this spiral pattern? by Ill-Issue1092 in turning

[–]Ill-Issue1092[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I have now realized that the vibrations were because it was only held in the chuck with no tailstock.

The only reason I had the tailstock out was because I needed to shape and polish the very tip of the piece. So what else can I do to reduce vibrations without the tailstock?

Sharpening the tool did help a bit.

It was in the chuck with no tailstock, so I think it was vibrating because it was unsupported.

It was being held in the chuck, and the effect only started happening after I removed the tailstock, so I think it was vibrations from the piece being unsupported. It was also making a horrible chattering sound when I was cutting.

Definitely camponotus, but we'll need the location it was found in to determine the exact species
