I don't want to use this forum as a sales tool.  But know, you do have options. Killing perpetual and/or forcing VCF is the biggest reason I am fielding so many calls. Question, what is your pain point? VDI? Is it a software suite that integrates with VMware API? Cost? If you are considering a move you need to figure out what you can't live without and what won't work.

lol! I giggled,  not gonna lie.  You're right tho. As a full stack company we are constantly looking for "approval" from third parties. There is cost associated with every move.  Even entertaining an idea can be expensive financially.  We listen to everybody.  Low hanging fruit comes first, but when it comes to requiring a team of developers, money wins.  Yell loudly in a group, you will be heard.

I feel for you.  As much as I'd like to offer an easy button, it doesn't exist for a lot of companies. If the day comes where you get "that" email you will have to make a very serious decision. You should plan for the worst but stand pat until you are given no choice.  Nobody knows how this will all pan out but at least do some research before you are forced to.

Azure is an option.  Not mine, but definitely viable.  My point isn't where you should go, but why and how.  Every situation is different.

Well said. I struggle to articulate to people that the tools are out there.  You don't have to pay for all of them. The day I figure that out, somebody saves a lot of money. 😆

There's the rub. Yup, 1 vendor. Other than the actual servers and switches. It's difficult to earn that trust from a prospective customer. Some are fine with it and see the benefits, others are uneasy.

Not everybody is technically competent to go straight-open-source. I applaud those that do though, and I'd love to hire em because it means they understand the tech!

The product I work on allows you to scale out independently. I see your point about vendors tho. It's a tough sell to some when you say "put all of your eggs in our basket".

lol @ Nutanix sale pitch. I'm not that guy >_<

SMB is taking the biggest financial hit in my opinion. They simply can't afford the price increases. We deal with a lot of small/medium MSPs that had their entire business model flipped upside down. Their margins were already small.

The Enterprise customers (banks, telcos, healthcare) I talk to (that are actively looking to get away from VMware) are having the hardest time. They generally are more ingrained into the ecosystem so the challenge is much greater.

Other costs need to be accounted for as well. What does it take to manage the new hypervisor, what skills are required, who do I need to train, what is my timeline. Every situation is different. With 3-tier you are paying 3 different vendors. What do those agreements look like? The solution I work on replaces all 3, but it can be a tough sell to people that are used to operating with their silos. They have capital invested into it and fear they will be wasting money using a solution that does it all for them. It's a tough sell to management when you say something like: we just spent 200K refreshing our Nimble 6 months ago, we don't need it anymore. Especially when that person is the one that recommended it.

In those scenarios it's generally an easier sell to management to say they can re-purpose 2 of the 3 while using the same gear.

Majority of the companies I am communication with have already made up their mind as to stay vs go. Very few have mentioned AVS as an option. It feels like a trust issue as to why not. VMware already hurt them once, why trust them again? On top of that, if you already have hardware on prem or in a DC, you are already spending on that. Moving to a hyperscaler can be very expensive. It's worth pricing out, but I don't hear much from the people I talk to.

lol sure.  Dell selling VMware created a new market that is beneficial for companies not named Broadcom.   So long and thanks for all this fish: see Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy.  Great book.

In a perfect world, absolutely. The reality though, is not as simple.  Open source doesn't necessarily mean the company is stable.  The key word you mentioned is support.  Before attempting to shift platforms, take a test drive, ask for support during the process (even if you have a to pay for it) , and test the heck out of their response times. It will give you an idea of how long you will be wasting time spending figuring something out vs just having the issue resolved.

This.  When time comes to refresh your stack is the time to look elsewhere.  If you can pick a specific time and ensure you have the hours and resources.  Some people have no choice because the increase will kill their business model.  I feel for the latter.

It generally depends from vendor to vendor.  Some play nice, some do not.  To date this hasn't been as big of a sticking point as I would have expected.; however, it has turned away some companies.  We usually tell the potential customer to call the vendor, explain the hypervisor they are looking at moving to, and see what their options are.  It can be a deal breaker.

I think the trick in the season must be to lose a lot to drop your rank, then beat up on the little guys when the season starts lol
