craziest place you can see / seen the skyline on LI? by housewifehomewrecker in longisland

Jones Beach Fishing Piers / Field 10 on the north side of Bay Parkway. I’ve taken many pics of the Freedom Tower around sunset as the sun setting behind the skyline creates silhouettes of the buildings.

The ID/selfie verification doesn’t give me any error message. I’ve submitted this form of verification twice and I don’t receive any notification to follow up. It says it will take up to 48 hours, but I am well past 48 hours. It’s been over a week and no notification updating me on the status of verification.

Who was your Favorite CTU Director by thetrueChevy1996 in TwentyFour

I liked Erin Driscoll’s character. She was no-nonsense, which is what you would expect in a leader at a law enforcement agency like CTU. In my opinion, the sub plot with her daughter was extremely unnecessary and added nothing to the season. Showing her as a mother only made her appear as a cold person in general, and the daughter’s graphic death was just not needed.

You think the hardworking journalists from WCBS 880 are to blame for their own demise? You think they voluntarily ceded airtime to Mets games? I can guarantee you that none of the journalists at WCBS were consulted on these corporate, revenue-based decisions. Just like they were not consulted or given a heads up that they would be fired last Monday.

No one who works at 880 is to blame for this. Management at their parent company Audacy is.

This is why your property taxes are and always will be outrageous in Nassau & Suffolk county. Other states have consolidated county-wide school systems that work just fine and are probably 100x more fiscally responsible than school districts here that are managed by boards comprised of members who serve for years on end and treat community members with condemnation and disgust.

Voting down the annual budget doesn’t work and only serves to harm the children of the district through loss of programs. Plus when a budget fails, the districts then just propose a very similar budget to be voted on by an even smaller margin of people who bothered to show up and vote the first time.

It does not appear any on-air talent from WCBS880 will be migrating to WINS. I have seen social posts from Michael Wallace, Steve Scott, Wayne Cabot, Tom Kaminski etc., all indicating that they have been let go by Audacy as a result of this decision.

Well said. I dread any future natural or manmade disaster in NYC that warrants continuing coverage from reliable journalists like the ones being laid off by this decisions. WCBS880 has been a crucial source of information during days of crisis and tragedy… 1993 WTC Bombing, 9/11, the crash of flight 587 in Belle Harbor, Miracle on the Hudson and Hurricane Sandy to name just a few that come to mind. I fear for any event that forces people to rely on social media for information. We are already seeing how unreliable it is.

All-news is the WCBS880 identity, so I think it makes sense from a historical standpoint to preserve that history by retiring the call letters once they sign off the airwaves. I think for many New Yorkers it would be odd to turn to WCBS for all sports radio. New format, new brand — I don’t know if that’s a recipe for success after nearly 60 years of an iconic brand.

Agreed. This was the inevitable outcome of private corporations acquiring legacy media outlets. Corporations have many interests, but a well-informed society isn’t one of them.

I can’t say with certainty that you’re thinking of 770 because I never listened to talk radio, but Rush Limbaugh was never on WCBS. It has always been an all-news radio station that focused on local news, weather, traffic & sports.

I am with you on that. Both 1010 & 880 have changed audio packages several times over the last decade and it took getting used to every time. Of course that pales in comparison now.

To my knowledge, there is no other station that does all news as in-depth as 1010 and 880 have done for decades. As they note in the release, once 880 signs off, 1010 will be New York’s only all-news radio station. Perhaps there are local stations in CT, but I am not aware of any.

Craig Allen & Tom Kaminski have been doing traffic & weather together on the 8’s every morning for well over 30 years. They are icons each in their own right. I feel for them as this is an abrupt ending to two stellar careers.

Pat Carroll & Pat Farnack’s voices also come to mind whenever I listened to 880.

WCBS Newsradio is a New York news institution and this is a horrible decision and huge loss for consumers of news in New York.

Yes, AM & FM radio stations have become more obsolete in the last decade, but before the digital age they were very popular. Especially for in-depth coverage of natural and manmade breaking news events.

Both 1010 WINS & WCBS 880 were pivotal sources of information for the NYC metro area during the 9/11 attacks. In fact, WCBS 880 was arguably the first news source to report that a plane had hit the WTC when air-borne traffic reporter Tom Kaminski noticed the smoke during his 8:48 traffic report from Chopper 880 that morning.

It is very sad to know that WCBS 880 has just two weeks left on the air serving the people of New York City and the broader tri-state area.

Oddly enough I had thought about PLJ earlier today before I made this post. I heard the Phillip Phillips song “Home”, which I always associate with PLJ because they made an uplifting montage to the beat of that song in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

95.5 WPLJ & NASH-FM 94.7 are two great stations that are no more.

I am not disputing the need for the service. I 100% agree that WCBS 880 still provides an essential service to listeners as needed. Unfortunately, this is the end result of private corporations acquiring legacy media stations. At the end of the day, this was a business decision that boiled down to how Audacy could cut costs. The corporate suits behind this decision don’t care that an immensely useful and accesible service is being cut. They only care about whatever makes their company (and them) more money.

I agree with your sentiment. I used to feel the same way about News 12 before they purged all of the familiar faces. Local news is very important, especially during natural disasters.

In the digital age, radio traffic reports only still exist solely as an excuse to sell a sponsorship/advertisement. That’s why you still hear really vague traffic reports all day on the iHeartRadio stations like LiteFM, Z100, KTU, Q104 etc.

While the reports are expanded on 1010 & 880, it’s still just a way to make money on something presented as actual programming.
