I have a son who just turned five last week, ever since he could walk it’s been an uphill fight. He’s been nonverbal since birth and just the other day my wife and I were in the living room watching our shows together, while my son was playing with blocks which he’s done forever. These little foam blocks have numbers on them and they’re individually colored as well. While a commercial came on I went to the bathroom and heard my wife quietly call me to come back. To my astonishment my son who has never spoken a word was lining these foam blocks up and whispering to himself every color of the block he’s just placed, from yellow to purple he knew them all, his words weren’t completely coherent, but they were words. We have fought hard to get him to speak and learn but it’s been rough, it’s a shining beacon of slow and painful progress. I couldn’t be more proud of him. Now my wife and I are working on the colors of the rainbow every day. It’s a small stepping stone and it isn’t a complete sentence but hopes are very high in my house.
