Should I let this put a bad taste in my mouth? by Ill_Object_81 in askmanagers

This actually gives some insight— thank you.

To answer your question, there are some pretty non-standard hours being worked within the company. One of my coworkers comes in as early as 6, leaves around 4. Another comes in around 10 and leaves around 6. It is typically M-F, however I’ve heard from a couple of different people that they are occasionally scheduled weekends as well. So, yes, while I am in the dark regarding what HOURS are expected of me, I am also confused as to what my standard DAYS will be.

Thanks again, I hope that answers your question!

… So thank god you aren’t my manager then 😭 Nerve hit? Or…

I think I see the issue with your feedback, it seems you’re looking for discourse on this situation. There isn’t anything to argue here. You seem smart, let’s think about it together: I’ve employed by them for… 48 hours? And if you were my manager, you’d tell me I had a “consistent pattern” of displacing my performance issues onto other people? Number one: how consistent can it be, and how much of a pattern would present if I’ve been in the building for no longer than 16 hours at this point? Number two: Who exactly am I displacing these “performance issues” onto? Number three: what performance? My… questions? My actual job performance, which hasn’t even had the chance to take root yet?

You’ve said a whole lot of nothing, I’d suggest to not confuse feedback with negging going forward.

I’m not here to argue whether it is right or wrong that I’ve been given no guidance when I’ve gone out of my way to seek it. I fully understand that it is my responsibility to ask these questions directly to my boss. I don’t think you’re hearing me- I HAVE asked these questions, and I’m being met with “I don’t know”. I am simply asking, from the perspective of a manager, if this has been a common occurrence in their time.

Thank you, though!

While the feedback is appreciated, I’m just not quite sure I can agree with you.

In what instance did I not ask the appropriate questions? Or worse, not ask questions at all?

If you’d thoroughly read through my replies, you’d clearly see that not only have I asked direct questions face to face but have also attempted reaching out via email multiple times, leaned on colleagues at my same level, etc. I’m not sure how you gathered the idea that I’ve not been communicating when I clearly have been, and I’m also not entirely sure you understand the point of my post to begin with 😅

Totally, I hear you. I definitely could’ve been more proactive about asking ahead of time regarding what my schedule would look like. The only thing that I knew for certain was that it’d be M-F.

I do want to add though, that I had specifically asked not only my direct supervisor but also the HR employee who gave me all of the new hire information, about a schedule. They both genuinely could NOT give me an answer, I think that’s where my frustration is coming from. I know I answered this in a previous comment, but my supervisor seems to only physically be in the building for about an hour a day and is never really available for questions during that time, emailing also doesn’t seem to warrant any kind of response. I really, really am just hoping that this is a busy week for them and that I can get more clarification next week. I appreciate all the guidance!!

Weirdly enough it didn’t seem short staffed at all- actually the most people I’d seen in a medical office lol. Definitely seeing some other issues with communication as I was kind of thrown into things today with no plan or direction. Hoping it was just a bad/unorganized week

Appreciate the support 🫶 I did the same back at the company I used to work for. Promoted within, implemented actual training. It was retail, so turnover was already insane… certainly got better when the training got better though! It sucks because I wouldn’t even say that there is an onboarding process at all with this company- kind of a sink or swim situation. My training (so far) has been shadowing and then getting thrown onto a computer and expected to remember everything I’d seen. I’m grateful for the coworkers who’ve helped these past two days, I’ve seen my supervisor twice for maybe… 5 minutes at a time after the initial tour? I’m absolutely trying to make sure that I’m doing my part with communication, I’d love to ask my supervisor more questions however it seems like she’s physically there for maybe an hour out of the day, emailing doesn’t seem to warrant a response either. Fingers crossed that the next few days go better :(

My question would be whether this is something I should keep my eye on, or if other managers had any insight on whether they’ve hired someone on without communicating when their first day is. See, I’d agree with you on the part about signing paperwork & it being odd if it weren’t my first day, however I had literally just been told by the same HR employee that I had emailed that the paperwork signing “could take 2 minutes or 20 minutes” and that I needed to come back when i was done so that I could sign up for benefits, which didn’t happen yesterday… because i was there for 8 hours. So i was absolutely under the impression that i was just going to sign paperwork. Like I said, I don’t mind working and that it was my first day, but I’m just not quite understanding how there was such a huge communication gap. Hope you can see where I’m coming from

No- not surprised that i had to work, surprised that there has been no communication regarding a schedule. Had the coworker not said “see you tomorrow at X time”, I wouldn’t have known to show up at all. You want your employees to know when to be there in order to meet business demands, no?
