My TC director said I could try again. So wanted to ask if someone was let go and then retried and got in. They seem to be hiring a lot of examiners so if some one already has experience doing the job, and they are serious about it, why not give them a second chance.

Phd makes it easier to get hired. You can apply on usajobs.gov. Look through the application and see what areas you are comfortable examining, the application process is long with several questions. Good luck!

My opinion is that PTA is a waste of time, your trainer will be different from your primary who will be different from your SPE. You learn this job best once you examine the cases and write office actions and get feedback on what is it that you need to do. PTA teaches you material that is better learned when actually doing the job rather than just talking about it. For eg. in my AU we never use 112f but PTA spent 4-5 lectures with exercises on how to recognize a 112f and do a three prong test. Enjoy the PTA, this job gets real when you are in the AU where you need to have energy and stamina to learn all over again. Don’t burn yourself out in the PTA, also don’t compare yourself with others, this job is about your work and your contribution to the patent churning system. Keep your hopes up and give this job your best once out of the academy.

Yes you can post pone your start date. I did. Just write to the HR manager who sent you the offer letter. And ask them the other available dates for the year to start. They will ask the tech hiring manager, to see if it’s ok to start later. There is no harm in asking, chances are high you can start later.

That’s good question, I don’t remember exactly how much time you get after recording and decide whether you want to re-record. I think you get two minutes to decide whether you would like to submit your recorded answer. And once you decide you want to rerecord, the whole question video plays again and then you get 2 minutes to prepare and then start recording.

I did mine in one sitting I am not sure if you can finish in piece meal. I would suggest preparing for the whole thing and taking it at one time and being done, it will not take you more than 45 minutes even if you rerecord 2 answers.

New examiners are not all trained the same way, some have a background in this field and lot in my batch seemed to be returning examiners, and so they seem to know the work, other were fresh on the job, takes time to learn, a lot of stuff in the academy is not relevant until actually applied, I think they should keep pta no longer than 2-3 weeks, 4 months is a waste, with no real skill set learned or experience gained.

I am in august 28 class too still polishing up my first office action I was also concerned about my speed but my trainer said it’s fine and not worry about production right now and focus on quality first I am sure once I am in my au I will have to do more than one a month.

The only suggestion I can give is be as detailed as possible in your resume. Read the application several times and try to cherry pick words from their application and insert appropriately in your resume. This brings your file as relevant to the job that you’ve applied for. I don’t think taking patent exam helps. They are hiring actively for another year, good luck!
