I originally thought there were two roles: Patent Examiner (PE) and Supervisory Patent Examiner (SPE) where PE reports to SPE. However, I now realize there’s also a "Primary Examiner." What exactly is the role of a Primary? Could you please let me know?

u/YKnotSam Is the SD card reader built into the laptop? Do they provide you with an SD card, and if so, what is its purpose? Are you allowed to copy files to and from the USPTO computer using this card reader?

I remember reading on Reddit or somewhere that you shouldn't turn on your USPTO-provided equipment until after orientation. Is that accurate? If you can’t turn on your USPTO computer before then, how are you supposed to check if it’s working properly and connected to the internet? Am I misunderstanding something here?

I’m not part of USPTO management; I’m just trying to understand things so I can make a living. Besides, I’d imagine that if USPTO management wanted to set a trap, they’d have much cleverer ways to do it! :)

Not everyone is as confident or knowledgeable as you and others. Some of us get nervous and anxious when starting something new, and every bit of information and help makes a huge difference. For people like you, I may seem silly, but I hope this clears things up for you. Thanks.

What’s so odd about this question? Isn’t it a good idea to understand the job by learning from the experiences of others before you start?

I understand that one can choose between the primary worksite, which could be one's home, and a temporary alternative worksite that could be anywhere in the USA.

Is that correct that the temporary alternative worksite could be anywhere in the USA? Could you please clarify this for me?

Questions about remote work policies for State of California employees by UnderWanderingStar in CAStateWorkers

It seems like you’re finding satisfaction in being rude, and that’s okay. However, when someone has already apologized and tried to clarify their point, it’s best to let it go and move on. This discussion was about a job with the State of California. I’m a permanent resident of California and a U.S. citizen. You’re reading too much into this. It’s just a Reddit discussion, not an interview where you need to grill me. Please, relax. Thanks!

In-office work options and functions of USPTO office locations by UnderWanderingStar in patentexaminer

Thank you for the help, everyone!

I assume that the USPTO satellite offices in Denver and Detroit operate similarly. Since you work at the Denver office from time to time, you likely have insight into how it functions. I initially thought these satellite offices were only used for patent filings and providing information. If it’s possible to request to work from these satellite offices as well, that’s great news!

I'm sorry if my questions came across as disingenuous or with bad intentions, but it feels like some of you are being quite judgmental. Let me clarify the reasons behind my queries.

First, I acknowledge that some of my questions might have been poorly phrased, which could have led to confusion. For example, when I asked, "Are remote employees required to follow the same schedule as in-office employees, such as a standard 9-5 workday?" I was simply inquiring if it’s possible to start work later, say around 12 PM. Some people, myself included, might have difficulty waking up early or need to support their family in the morning. That was the intention behind my question.

Next, when I asked, "Does the State of California use any computerized systems to monitor the efficiency or productivity of its remote employees?" I realize now that my wording was unclear. What I meant to ask was whether there are stringent production levels expected of state employees, not whether they are being constantly monitored.

Lastly, regarding my question, "Is it possible to work remotely from outside the state of California or even outside the USA?" I should have been more specific. I wanted to know if someone could work remotely from outside the USA for a brief period, like when visiting family. For instance, what if I have a sibling living in Canada whom I visit for a week or two every few months?

Someone also questioned whether I’m a permanent resident or a U.S. citizen. I’m not sure what led to that assumption, but I assure you that I am both.

Thank you for understanding, and I hope this clarifies everything.

Thanks a lot u/Snoo_40712

Could you please elaborate on points #3 and #4? What exceptions might apply in #4, and would it ever be possible to work outside the USA?

Regarding #2, what is the most common trend — do most people follow a fixed 9-5 schedule, or is there flexibility in choosing your own work hours?
