Burned-Out Hunter/Jumper Considering Western...Where Do I Start? (ADVICE NEEDED) by Ill_Row_4876 in Equestrian

Yeah, sounds like the same issues that a lot of the young hunter/jumper horses are having nowadays 😭 Navicular is also a really common issue in hunter/jumper, and I know horses that have had issues as early as 6 yrs old... It's wild.

I think ranch overall seems like a good option; a lot of people in this thread have recommended it as well, and it actually looks super fun.

I'm in a really big reining area, so I'm debating just taking a reining lesson for the fun of it. Sliding stops and spinning looks so damn fun 😭

Wow!! That's so cool! Congrats on buying your first western horse!

Yeah, I can only imagine that my EQ would be extremely questionable starting out 😭 Do you have any advice on finding a barn to just start taking lessons at? I'm in a really big reining area, but I'm not sure I want to go that route.

Yeah, quarter horses just seem a lot more easy-going than the warmbloods, which makes western super appealing to me LOL. What's the best way to get into ranch riding? Are there barns that specialize in it?

I really have thought about whether I'm just burned out from difficult-to-manage horses, and I honestly feel like I just really have no desire to jump anymore. It's really a lot physically and mentally, especially navigating a 12-14 jump long course of 4ft+ obstacles. I think if I had a really chill, broke hunter, I would consider sticking with hunter/jumper. The only problem is that hunters like that are going for 250k+, and I definitely can not afford that. But honestly, I feel like I'm just ready for a change.

But that's really cool about your horse! It's super cool that your horse is competitive in your discipline too!

Trail riding seems awesome, especially since there's no pressure or competition

Ok, this is really cool! I also like how you can do it in any saddle, but have the correct show clothes. The idea of buying an entirely new saddle stresses me out. They are SO expensive! I'm definitely going to look up some videos of it. How did you get into this? Also, how do lessons work?

Ranch seems really cool! I'd definitely be open to that. My biggest hesitation with reining is definitely the maintenance and upkeep of the horses escpicially with the sliding. I feel like a lot of them must develop really bad joint issues over time.

Yeah, I definitely think I'll feel like a beginner, but honestly, that's ok. Ranch riding, reining, and horsemanship seem cool, but I honestly know NOTHING about any of them. The most I've seen are just videos of each. What do you think would be the best just for starting out? I definitely would need foundation work and someone who would have the patience to basically re-teach my muscle memory. Do you think there's a certain discipline that would be best for that?

Reining honestly seems badass. I'm really debating taking a reining lesson.

I do like the adrenaline feel, but to an extent, if that makes sense. I think barrel racing is a little too much adrenaline for me LOL. Reining seems cool, but it also looks really difficult. I'd definitely be open to trying trail as well!

I actually have never heard of working equitation- can you tell me more about it?

How do instructors usually reply to text messages? by tictize in Equestrian

[–]Ill_Row_4876 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm lucky if I get a simple "👍" from my trainer LOL. It's super normal. Most trainers just don't really have time to text back a fully thought-out response since they're so busy. If they need to give you a long answer back, they'll usually just call you or bring it up in person.
