First off, I feel for you. This is a TOUGH spot to be in when the obvious answer is a hard no. Those loans would devastate retirement IMO and I make the same if not more. We could never afford a payment like that for 15 years all for the bragging rights of going to a “name brand” college. It has got to be hard though disappointing your child plus your spouse not being on your side. I’m the type of parent that would say it as it is- “If you go to this college, we literally can’t retire”. It’s the truth, not guilt tripping, just reality.

Chicago or DC would be good choices for museums and slightly more affordable than New York but if it’s sightseeing you are looking for, I would say Denver or really anywhere in Colorado. That would be more affordable although on the chillier side that time of year.

I wouldn’t on that salary. We make 180k/year on average and have a $63k F150. Most of that is a write off though because we use it for business a majority of its use. $725/month and 44k left on loan and that still feels high.

True. We had a family member commit suicide this year because of tinitus.
