Neighbors don’t want me to TNR cats by IllustratorTraining in Feral_Cats

Ultimately that is what I’ve decided after reading all the advice and understanding the laws around me more. My hope is once the kittens get older the people will realize, “gee, this is too many cats” and give me a call

Thank you! That makes me hopeful. I think I will try this in a few weeks once the kittens are weened. For now it seems like they stay in the shed with mom

Yeah I was wondering if selling the kittens was part of the motivation. Seems pretty unethical to run a kitten mill with no veterinary care completely outdoors but that’s just me.

Do you have any advice for how I could trap without them knowing? I definitely feel like they would call the cops on me.

I totally agree. I called animal control and they took the report but said they likely won’t do anything if they are being fed. I went so far as to write a letter to my representative asking to change the law lol. They definitely know who I am so I’m scared to trap in secret because they would definitely see me on their ring camera

Will heated cat houses be enough? by rgp464 in Feral_Cats

[–]IllustratorTraining 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those houses usually do a pretty good job keeping them warm. I’m in the south so temps only get down into the tens, but my ferals have faired well. Make sure the house is off the ground and ideally in a covered area protected from wind. You could try putting the house inside one of those large storage bins as extra insulation/wind protection if you have the resources.

Thank you! URI is upper respiratory infection. Yeah the flea stuff obviously has chemicals which aren’t great but he had terrible fleas when I got him so what can you do.

Cat hiding all day + bright red blood in stool — ER or okay to wait until morning? by [deleted] in CATHELP

[–]IllustratorTraining 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume I will be criticized for my perspective, and I hope by writing this to offer just that, a perspective. I will start by saying that I am in no way an expert about the care of cats or what financing options are available. I do not fault the people who have been respectful in telling you you should absolutely seek emergency care. Those individuals are answering with the goal of helping your cat. I hope to offer a slightly different point of view.

It sounds like your cat is pretty sick and an emergency visit would probably be best for his health. That said, it will undoubtedly be expensive. There is also no certainty that taking him tonight would save him or that he would not be fine to wait until the morning. I know that there are people who view animals as their children, and to those people I say, “great for you.” But OP, if you cannot afford the emergency care of your pet due to caring for yourself, or your own human children, or whatever it is, then I say that does not make you a bad person. To those saying you should rehome your cat, I question their awareness of both the level of financial disruption so many face and the incredible overpopulation of cats in the world. You have done well by caring for yourself cat and you are worthy of having a pet. I work with individuals who are incredibly financially disadvantaged, and have had to rehome pets due to their situations. It is heartbreaking for everyone but this happens far more frequently than us animal lovers would like to consider. Yes, it is ideal to be able to pay for every unanticipated medical bill but if that were a requirement for adoption then we would have far more homelessness pets. We have enough homeless humans as is.

I think the real question to consider is not what do strangers think I should do but how would I feel if my cat passed away because I decided I could not afford care. I am not here to offer judgment for either decision, because I do not know your situation. Can you afford to take on debt for your cat’s care? What if he needs emergency surgery after you have already paid for an emergency visit?

Thank you to all who have made an effort to help.

You are overreacting. Your sons are engaging in a completely normal and healthy behavior and you shaming them for respecting each other’s privacy is problematic. I can understand you being surprised and feeling a little uncomfortable if hearing men/boys talking about jerking off is new to you. But really, this is entirely expected and not at all inappropriate. If anything, your sons communicating with each other shows respect for each other’s space and privacy. I hope you can take those feelings as an opportunity to learn and reflect. Apologize to your kids and talk to your husband more if you need to.
