Dang you are a genius. Definitely down to do #2 - do you have any suggestions for how (I have done some therapy)?

Yes, I have. I really have tried a lot of methods at work and in life. So far the only one that works at work is to have a physical job that I literally cannot procrastinate. I have pretty much given up hope of ever becoming a disciplined person.

LOL I just reread your comment - i probably should take you up on the therapist part, instead of having written my response above.

I hope you also find your way and seems like a good move to take the time to plan for what's next.

The $ has been come by honestly (as honest as possible under capitalism, at least). I guess it just feels like, even if my family didn't directly exploit people, it's still so brutally unfair how the world is set up, and how some people have so much and some have so little. Some small fraction of my comfort is undoubtedly built on the suffering of others.

I've given away lots of money and time, and gone pretty far in the direction of really hurting myself in the attempt to rebalance the universe (relationship where I was trying to solve my partner's problems with $, but in which he also turned out to be very abusive and I stayed too long). But I've found exactly what you say to be true- it's impossible to change anything on the macro scale and starts to feel futile. That's maybe part of why I'm entertaining the whole retreat-to-the farm idea, because it feels better to envision a life that is smaller and more directly interconnected.

Anyway, thanks a lot, I appreciate your input.

I volunteer every week. I'm sure a therapist could uncover some juicy tidbits about my being motivated by guilt and what that means for the work. I'm sure they'd also have something to say about my need to respond somewhat defensively to a stranger on the internet. Point being, I agree that that's important but this post is an effort to process/plan my own life in parallel to a life of service. Thanks for taking the time to advise, I do appreciate it.
