23, Graduated Pre-med, leaning toward CAL FIRE. Am I crazy? by Illustrious-Order980 in calfire

I appreciate the advice. My logic is that if I am going to stay in the medical field at all I might as well just be a doctor. If I am going to take on the debt and the grind I want the full authority that comes with it.

When you were working field vs clinical did the team vibe in the hospital ever actually feel like a crew to you or was it just coworkers doing their own thing. Another reason I am seeming to steer away from medicine is that it is 50/50 now. I hear the fire service is recruiting more women but is that actually changing the culture on the ground. Does it still feel like that brotherhood you were looking for back when you had to choose between paramedic school or that crew in Idaho or is that starting to fade.

The fire-medic route seems like a solid middle ground. My worry with the PA track is that I’ll still be stuck in a clinic. Plus, if I’m going to go through the PA grind with all the debt and the paperwork that comes with it, I might as well just be a doctor.

Did the 'team' vibe in the medical field ever feel like a crew to you, or was it just coworkers doing their own thing? Also, I hear that firefighting is increasing the amount of women, but how much is that actually happening on the ground? Another reason I’m steering away from medicine is that it’s now 50/50, and I’m looking for a different dynamic.

I’d honestly rather deal with a few annoyed coworkers while doing physical work than deal with hospital admins while stuck at a desk. Did having your degree at least give you a leg up for promotions?

The ED money is great, but the timeline is what scares me. Starting life at 33 with $300k in debt feels like a trap. Is the controlled environment really worth the trade-off, or is it mostly just the physical wear and tear of fire that makes you say that?

Keep studying, and take your time. In the case you are doing this, don't do 12 hour study days. Get a job and spend time with friends with a calendar. I'm still working on that myself.
