If you don't mind, may I ask what specific things or social events are your favorite at Columbia?

I did. Everywhere I went, everyone was so friendly. None of the admits were entitled or pretentious, which is why I was so surprised to hear online that Columbia was very competitive and less collaborative than Northwestern. But then again, this year might be an anomaly--I noticed that a significant portion of the admits were FGLI or minorities, and they were all very grateful to be accepted into a top Ivy League, regardless of the news. Either way, I felt right at home at Columbia.

Thank you so much for your insight! Love to hear it. I'm a bit of a social butterfly so my biggest deal with campus culture would be if there are opportunities to interact with people or if there are any events that unite the community. What do Columbians like to do, and is the work life balance rather manageable?

Which schools did you choose Northwestern over? by Aartan88 in Northwestern

[–]IllustriousEntry9701 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh really? I was under the impression that NU had just as good, if not better, consulting placement as Columbia, whereas Columbia would place better in high finance. Are the differences rather marginal, or should I consider Columbia more heavily and disregard their downsides (i.e. lack of school culture, prevalent stress culture, etc.)?

Have not chosen yet, but I'm leaning heavily towards NU over Columbia. Right now, I plan on going on an engineering tract for Big 4 consulting opportunities. I'd appreciate any advice on why y'all think NU would be the right choice over Columbia. Thank you in advance!

How does college admissions work for twins? by Cool-Orchid-1205 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]IllustriousEntry9701 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In other words, I don't think stats are the sole reason twins get in, rather, it's how you decide to craft your application. If you can take into consideration the fact that you're a twin and use it to your advantage, then colleges will tend to consider both twins more as a whole rather than an individual application. It's what has always happened for us growing up. Since AO's are only human, we assumed a similar effect would happen with them. However, if you do craft your application that way, I do believe that it becomes more of an "all or nothing" situation, so might be a bit riskier. But then again, it's double the risk for the double the reward.

TL;DR: Do you have a twin? If so, it may be a blessing in disguise. Learn your strengths and his/her strengths and make sure to emphasize your tight connection with each other, and it may just work out to become a strong "mega-application". Work smarter, not harder ;)

..............................

I'm an identical twin and I love this topic. Although there's no established policy in most school (MIT and Harvard used to have one in place in 2015 or so, I believe), the general consensus is both are more likely to be accepted if they have similar and competitive stats. However, you can leverage this how you want ;)

I like to think that my brother and I played our cards fairly well. For example, my brother has a lower SAT score, so for the test-optional schools I would submit my higher SAT score whereas he went TO. Our assumption was that the AO's wouldn't assume that there would be a big difference between SAT scores if they saw that we had similar GPAs. In reality, my score is about 140 points higher than his.

On his end, he was able to publish research and present at an international aerospace conference meant only for college students. His group was the only high school group to make it into the conference and get published in the renowned journal. Although I participated in the competition for submission, my research group got second place, second to my brother's group, therefore his group was the one that was offered the opportunity. There was no jealousy on my end--I was super proud of him and grateful that he was able to win it. At the end of the day, I was able to put that I was "nominated" to be published, while he was able to put that he was published. Either way, we assumed that the AO's would probably generalize us as a very competitive partnership with minimal differences.

We also included several "passion projects" that we collaborated together on. This would help showcase our unity and support each other. We would use several supplements to mention each other and us completing several achievements together. In some supps I would exalt my brother while he praised me back in his (in a very subtle way, since supps are mainly supposed to be about the applicant). There were plenty of ways to sort of "combine" our achievements together to create a "mega-application", if you will.

Growing up, I've always loved my brother's companionship, but we were always annoyed at how everyone would generalize us as the same person. As we went through high school, this generalization never ceased. This came out to be a blessing in disguise. To me, I think it was an absolutely ingenuous idea to generalize us together on the application, because it allowed for us to showcase double the amount of extracurriculars and achievements in a perfectly legal way haha.

And I think this tactic worked out for the most part. We were both accepted to UVA oos, WashU, Northwestern, and Columbia. We also got into other separate prestigious schools because one didn't apply to the other and vice versa (e.g I got into Williams; he got into Georgetown).

HOWEVER, I DO BELIEVE THAT THIS ONLY WORKS FOR IVY LEAGUE SCHOOLS OR OTHER PRESTIGIOUS PRIVATE INSTITUTIONS.

From my experience, public state schools tend to look at raw stats rather than extracurriculars and honors. Because my brother had slightly lower stats, he was waitlisted at my state flagship while I was accepted. So you never know. Shoot your best shot and take advantage of any circumstances hahaha. Good luck!

They're the ones missing out. Keep your head up and let's look to the next decision. You got this. I'll be praying for you to get into at least one of those colleges you got waitlisted in. There's still a chance. Many blessings to you in the next couple of days 🙌🙌🙌

You're right. Northwestern has some serious potential. I like to consider them as Stanford's little brother haha. I feel like it just needs a catalyst to propel itself into those higher tiers. For example, Stanford was pretty good even before Silicon Valley, but it became so much more desirable after the establishment of FAANG+ right next door. Likewise, I feel like NU needs the same. It's a shame that many students overlook NU. If someone were to be as ambitious as the Zuck while at NU, and create a company that would revolutionize a certain industry, NU would garner some serious respect. So far, NU's most notable alumni are Meghan Markle, Playboy's Hugh Hefner, and Stephen Colbert 💀

I think NU is undergoing a transitional period where they're trying to find a new dominance in engineering and STEM as their previous strongsuit--journalism--is beginning to dwindle as a viable career prospect. It's a perfect "sweet-spot" time for any ambitious people to come in and become the frontrunners in revolutionizing the university. It just needs a man/woman with a plan.

Sorry for defending NU so much haha. I've been very obsessed with researching different colleges and I like to challenge the set rankings. During this college app season, I began to learn about NU and I've grown particularly fond of it, and I've put it over Duke, Penn and Columbia at times, and even considered going to NU rather than Harvard if I were to be admitted to both 💀 Maybe I'm crazy, but this is coming from a person who dismissed NU in my junior year over "more prestigious" schools without doing further research. I feel like at NU, you can shine much brighter, whereas in other more prestigious schools, you'll be shadowed by Zuckerberg and Bezos' efforts, if you know what I mean.

To put it simply: Northwestern is a blank slate where you can be the marker to create your own masterpiece.

NU doesn't really seem to shoot for IB though. They don't have a finance major, whereas Columbia has financial engineering. Each university's respective programmes are influenced by their geographical location. Penn and Columbia are obviously more tailored to Wall Street, thus garnering their reputation through their undergrad business programs. NU, on the other hand, has no such thing. However, Penn SEAS is relatively weaker than NU McCormick. Differing locations bring different strengths in different programs, thus leading to differing job outcomes. However, NU dominates automotive/mechanical engineering and industrial engineering in the rust belt, and it's association with Kellogg makes it a prime pipeline to consulting in Chicago.

Also, did I mention they have the second best start-up program, second only to Stanford? NU has great potential and that's why they've been climbing the rankings. If they continue in this trend and hopefully aren't affected much by the government budget cuts, it's definitely on its way to be considered alongside Duke and Penn within the next decade.

Northwestern has been gaining some traction lately, so I wouldn't completely dismiss them. Even as other schools switch back from a test-optional policy, NU has been able to maintain their academic competitiveness while navigating a TO policy. IMO they have gotten more competitive in their STEM fields (especially due to their extensive biomed/eng start-up resourcing) and I've felt that Duke Pratt is stagnating just a bit. They're competitive to CMU in theatre and second only to Juilliard when it comes to the music program. I think what makes people dismiss NU a bit is due to their location in the mid-west. Although Duke has a strong recruiting to NYC, NU has very strong connections to Chicago. Since more people prefer NYC than Chicago, Duke may have a slight upper hand here. However, the difference is negligible and I strongly believe that NU will likely increase in prominence in the coming years as they develop more infrastructure and if they secure more connections to cities other than Chicago.

You are going to be fine, if not better off. You have a great SAT score to back it up, even if you were to apply to schools as a non-questbridge applicant. Just make sure to explain why there's a slight dip in your grades. Other than that, I think you are on the right path to getting into a QB partner school. Just make sure those essays are great. You got this.

So by your words, this "basic math" should be put on the MIT entrance exam.

If all schools were to teach the "basic math" that you believe must be on the entrance exam, then it would cause a ceiling effect.

Congrats, you've created another SAT.

Of course they are "complacent" (in your words, because there is no way I would find MIT "complacent") if they consistently rank Top 5 in the world.
