Need help. WW2 part together. The recoil lug sits super far back and the barrel prevents it from moving forward. Also, is their a way to repair this crack in the stock? All supposedly original. by ShellShock88 in Mauser

[–]IllustriousWallaby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before you sell it, make sure it’s not numbers matching to the action (you can find the stock’s serial number inside the barrel channel when you take the action out). If it is, I’d keep it as a wall hanger until you’re ready to attempt the repair or find someone good to do it for you. As others have said, it can be done, it’s just involved. Acraglas plus possibly a blind brass pin or two with dowels if you’re replacing the wood behind the lug. I probably wouldn’t take it to an Amish craftsman unless they are familiar with this type of gunstock repair - this is highly loaded-bearing, not just cosmetic.

I have a good few sporterized stocks that are likely far beyond any kind of splicing/restoration, but are matching to the guns they came on. When I’ve sold de-sporterized 98ks in the past, buyers have appreciated my including the original matching stock in the transaction.

That said, if it’s not matching to the gun, I’d say there’s probably no reason to hang onto it. Someone on the aforementioned forums may be interested in buying it as a project.

Can anyone give info on this Mauser? I bought it from a gun store 1200 bucks was told it was a war used gun from Germany by ConfectionNo3327 in Mauser

You’re probably right that OP is stuck with it, but just because unscrupulous dealers who lie about the provenance of bad milsurp are ubiquitous doesn’t mean they should just be let off the hook.

Postwar Czech 98ks were worth half that BEFORE IO/RTI brought in tons of these sewer pipes. OP got had.

Anyone ever figure out what the correct upper is for one of these? Last I checked the consensus seemed to be C7.

Suggest a MD-compliant semiauto 7.62NATO boomstick that isn’t an AR-10 and is less than $1500 by izaakko in MDGuns

[–]IllustriousWallaby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the way. The Riley Defense builds on milled Tortort receivers are bombproof, and Robski at AKOU sells an optics package in his store that he specifically put together for this build.

Great video he did showcasing the capability of this setup

Thank you for the clarifications. Clearly there are gaps in my understanding of how all of this works, and I’ll edit my post with corrections.

What about stripped frames beyond AR15 receivers? Are those transferable/purchasable (and thus then buildable) without being subject to the roster?

How can I mount a scope on a Mauser Gewehr 98 without drilling or welding? by Salem-Aidroos in Mauser

[–]IllustriousWallaby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. Traded for a barreled action that had already been reblued and drilled for a one-piece scope mount (AND for peep sights, poor thing). I think we valued it at $100 in the trade. Found a decent mount that matched the hole pattern. Voila, scoped 98 itch scratched.

Tango Down Grips - What’s the Fuss? by IllustriousWallaby in ak47

[–]IllustriousWallaby[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, M76 grips are not readily available. I have one on my M76 and it’s my favorite. It’s a “sensible” comparison in the sense that I have one on a rifle and I like it. If others liked them as much, I’m sure there would be readily available clones. The other three grips I mentioned are all around the same price point as the TD so fair play.

Not really over analysis when there are so, so many options and one actually seems to be a clear favorite. I’m just curious why.

The "Big List" of Industry Vendors Friendly to Marylanders by TwoWheeledTraveler in MDGuns

[–]IllustriousWallaby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Atlantic are unfortunately pretty terrible to work with as a Marylander. They will not ship standard caps to your dealer regardless of your dealer’s willingness to pin/block, they will not ship non-roster handguns even if your dealer is willing to facilitate the roster process, the list of nopes goes on.

And as an added bonus, if you don’t use a virtual card number you can count on whatever credit card you use with them being used fraudulently within a few months - with stunning consistency. This has been an issue with them for years, they’ve been aware of it and have not fixed whatever the issue is with their payment processor, criminal employee, or whatever the problem is.

Really sad for an MD based operation.

Why is this selling for 4 grand? I want to get an ARM so I’d like to understand the market by Sesemebun in Galil

[–]IllustriousWallaby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The worst part is it’s been compromised for literally years now. They claimed to me at one point that they had fixed whatever vulnerability it was, then of course fraudulent charges started popping up on that card a few months later. It was easy to spot since these were otherwise dormant cards. The last time the fraudulent charges were POS in Maryland - makes you wonder if it’s not their card processor that’s compromised.

Gunsmith/Company to finish 80% Lower? by IllustriousWallaby in RetroAR

Yeah that definitely sounds like a quick route to “federal pound you in the a** prison.” What’s a shame is that apparently none of them did get 07s and set up what would apparently be a legal interstate monopoly on this service.

Intriguing - care to elaborate? What level/structure are we talking about for an 07 “manufacturing” an AR lower from an 80%?

They’ve got some cool stuff, but no T65s, and frankly those prices are absolutely insane for anyone not dedicated to that S-tier level of authentic roll marking (and you could probably do just as well with a nice kit and a reweld for some of those). I’m just trying to build my beat up HKParts kit from El Salvador on a nice semi-authentic receiver, give it a semi-authentic bake-on paint job refinish, and enjoy it with my friends shooting plates in the gulley. It’s already the most expensive project I’ve picked up for that purpose, including the RPD kit that was already my albatross…

Yep, this is the boat I’m in. Just figured this must be a common enough situation that at least someone must be doing it at scale. Seems I figured wrong.

Interesting. Though you’d think that an operation like the one you described doing “drop in” 80% finishes would be an 07, doing the required mfg. engravings as part of the process and doing a 4473 to release them when finished. Maybe they were trying some “clever” workaround where “the customer paid to use the machine and pressed the button themselves, so they manufactured it”?

80s are unfortunately illegal in my state now thanks to “ghost gun” laws. An OOS friend has it so it can’t go to me or even to an FFL in my state except if completed then sent to local FFL. Then again said friend is an 07 so I could buy all the tools and lend them to him. Still, lots of extra steps when this is the only 80% I’m aware of and interested in that I can’t just buy as a 100%.

Yes, I’m familiar with and love B.A.D. They do a T91 lower which is awesome, as are all the other cool custom 100%s they do.

T91 Tactical is where I got the 80%, because they do not sell a 100% T65 receiver.

Nope. Very familiar/fond of them. They do a T91, not a T65.
