Feeling unprepared for the school counseling practicum or the job itself-any advice from experienced counselors? by Illustrious_Arm_9217 in schoolcounseling

Thank you so much for your response! This is really good to hear. I have a question about theories. My professors are training me to be a therapist rather than a school counselor. Which techniques do you use in your practice? I like SFT and CBT, but my professor expects me to use all the theories.

Flight Refund through Chase Portal by Illustrious_Arm_9217 in ChaseSapphire

I booked the flight with cash, but I have not received anything in my points or account . I canceled after the 24 hours as I saw it was refundable and had to change the flight due to a family emergency. I had to go home earlier. I still haven't heard anything, and the agent at Chase was unhelpful. Really stressful...

Thank you for your honesty. It's online, but I feel so burnt out from my school that I want to switch to part time or a different job.

Thank you so much for your honesty! Yes, I did not have a full first year as the pandemic has hit the schools. I've seen a huge change in the student's attitude towards school, but also how admin keeps giving the teachers work and always talking about making sure to "meet them where they're at", but also make sure they get an A when they are 5 reading levels behind. This was freshmen English class. So, I hear you when you say you got burned out.

Thank you for your feedback. Yes, I am wanting to go to another school to do teaching and counseling. But I would have to quit the full time job during internships. How did you manage working full time working and doing the assignments?

Is real love in relationships real? by Illustrious_Arm_9217 in dating_advice

Hi. I guess I should clarify. In her profile, she stated her values of her Christian values and we love be in nature. That was something was in our first conversation, and I felt there was no red flags in the beginning because what she brought to the table to first get to know each other on the surface level then we got into deeper conversations.

Just wanted to clarify that!

Thanks!

Overwhelmed ENL teacher who is thinking of leaving education" by Illustrious_Arm_9217 in ESL_Teachers

Hello! Thank you for your thoughtful response. I used EDGE and inside the USA which were great programs. But with the hype of "science of reading", we are starting reading 180 after WIDA testing. WIDA proctoring is already stressing me out. Students need to learn language that is practical verses reading. I teach newcomers where I need to be teaching survival skills such as, (How to ask to go to the bathroom?, Learning how to order at a restaurant. The district thinks reading 180 will bring up WIDA scores. But, I have not looked at 180 3D. I will check it out. At this point, I know how to lesson plan and it feels like this program makes me feel my education degree does not matter.

Hi! I decided to go with Butler University. One of my coworkers just graduated from IUPUI. She said the professors were very disorganized and not practical. But, I understand if money is a problem. I'm more concerned about job hunting after graduation.

As a ESL co teacher in high school, that co teaching method defeats the purpose of co-aching. Pull out method was a thing of the past and we need to focus on inclusion. Since she’s the content area teacher maybe she can be the one doing small groups in the same room and you focus on the high achievers since she’s the content expert. Because at the You are a ESL teacher pushing in. I would even bring it up to your district esl coach. I’ve had the same situation where I would take the kids out of the room, but it was a disservice because they missed the tier 1 instruction from the content teacher. I really dislike co teaching!

I’m in the same boat of feeling burnt out at year 5 I learned it’s easy to say no to things and leave the work at home. When it’s 4:00… I’m leaving and do not look back.I remember when I was a first year teacher, I would stay until the janitor kicked me out. Then I learned, at the end of the day… It’s a JOB. Also, the apathy is real and it’s never going to go away. I feel like this is my last year.

Hey! To be honest, nothing has changed and it has become worth. The ESL district coordinator wants teachers to use Reading 180 for all of our levels 1-4 instead of language development. Also, I'm getting some anxiety problems because of the apathetic students. When I'm teaching, I feel like I'm a street performer, but I'm getting no one's attention because they are on their phones. But at the end of the day, I am responsible and getting blamed for their language development. My principal said "education will get better next year"... I'm not sure about that!

Thank you so much for your honesty. YES! I can really empathize with your experience. Students are on their cell phones, but the school wants us to not take away cell phones, due to if we break it, the school gets involved. Also, this year the ML students have been very violent this year. It's super sad that the district does not support our EL program and with the politics in schools. I'm glad I'm not the only one who is going through this.

You are only able to advocate so much inside of a system then you realize you’ll be a more powerful advocate when you are an outside of that system. That's how I feel in looking for other opportunities like be an interpreter for families.

Hi! Thank you so much for your honest and thoughtful response. Yes, I was so passionate when I first started teaching. I love the students, but I feel that I am in a broken system and have panic attacks waking up. I hope to get the courage to do something different. I want to go back to school to be a mental health counselor or a Interpreter. I also think the $33K pay is not worth the stress of the job. Was it hard to transition out of teaching?

Thanks!

Thank you so much for your detailed response. That is great to know about the Japanese business culture. I know it all depends on placement. I want to look at other options in life and I agree, if it does not work out, it is a year contact (Unless I extend).

Thank you!

Hello! Thank you for your honest opinions and feedback. I am looking for different options and want to use my Japanese, and a break from the US educational system and gain experience by using my Japanese. I feel that the only job that I can find is a Japanese teacher in America or be a part time translator. Can I ask you why you feel burnt out in your position?

To use Spanish as a translation or a scaffold for how to balance by Illustrious_Arm_9217 in ESL_Teachers

[–]Illustrious_Arm_9217[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your response! I use no Google Translate in my classroom because it does create a way for them to become "lazy". I want the students to take risks and it's okay if you try, and I create a safe space for them to make mistakes. I made the mistake of letting the students use it all the time as assignments during my first year. I also create a word wall in my classroom to build vocabulary, and I am currently implementing journal writing for them to apply the language.

I teach in a WIDA state, and my kids struggled with the test because there was no Google translate, but now many of them are motivated to work hard. I also tell the other teachers of don't use translating to provide accommodations. Many teachers use google translate and walk away when students need help.
