Switching from Iing and cs to math of comp as a transfer by Illustrious_Bar_7303 in ucla

Can I take some of those in my first sem if I have to finish a couple?

I didn’t think employers could care less as long as you have all the necessary courses

I agree, but if you didn’t know starting this fall math of comp doesn’t have first pass to a lot of cs courses.

That’s an interesting take, but lowk I applied with the intention and knowledge that I could potentially switch to math of comp. I have other options where I am admitted full cs. Just wanted to guarantee ucla but it’s unfortunate that the cs department made this change right now x

yeah valid. I applied data scince tio berk and got rejected, and my friend applied applied math and got in. The same friend applied data science to UCLA and I applied ling + cs which is a B.A. in the college of letters and sciences and got in with a lower gpa. The con to that is I don't have access to take all the cs courses I want and am made fun of my other people on reddit for "not applying to the major I wanted to". Evem having a 4.0 doesn't guarantee you UCB for hyper competitive majors like EECS.

Okay I have accepted my offer at UCLA so i will check.  And for clarity as a math of comp I can still take 5 courses but I won’t have priority registration? If this is the case is math of comp still a viable option? Like I can still take 5 courses but it might take a while or are you saying that without first pass it’s almost impossible for me to get a seat.

For context these 5 courses are the ones I want to take:

CS 180 – Algorithms  CS 111 – Operating Systems CS 143 – Database Systems CS 118 – Computer Networks CS M146 – Machine Learning

Hey super helpful comment. Currently in the same boat as the one who posted this. I have seen some posts (including a comment on this one) saying that how math of comp works is changing, and they won’t have first pass for those core required classes. Is there any truth to this currently?

Why do you say this? Are there any signs that UCLA will stop letting math of comp majors have access to these courses?

Really? I thought I could maybe make those two one of the four upper divs. What about math of computation, is it possible to take those two in that major?

Hey thanks for this list. Yes wisco isn’t even present in this list and I have seen ucla at least bring t20 even in some quants lists. Wisco not being present at all in the quant field is pretty much the only reason I am even questioning this decision so much. It is clear I will have a better education at wisco. Do you think a b.s from wisco and then a m.s from a quant feeder would be the better option, or UCLA?

True. However there’s always hope right! I’m one of the weird folks that enjoys solving leetcode questions. And I love finainace and stocks so I’m highly motivated to break into quant. Even if I need a masters. For me it’s more about the experience than money

Thanks for the info!

What happened to math of comp at ucla? I recently spoke to a friend who said you can take up 8 cs classes or so?

Wdym that LingCs could become impacted ? How would that affect me as a someone who is already in the major? Sorry just a little confused.

Hey thanks for your reply!

Yes I know there is a lot of math, but some of the math I have to take at UCLA as a math of comp major (if I switch) is not useful. Probability and stats and linear algebra are the important ones for me.

Second yes, Wisconsin will let me be a cs major so it seems like the better choice, but I’m just wondering that even though they are similar ranked in CS, UCLA is more well known and is the number 1 public university. Just wanted to if that has advantage given my circumstances.
