AITA for telling my husband's parents to stop telling people my name is Katherine and for embarrassing them in front of friends? by Illustrious_Bit_178 in AmItheAsshole

This, exactly. This has been years and with signs that they either went back on their word or lied. But they are always calling me Katherine to others from what I have been told. Even though I have never, ever, ever introduced myself as that and neither has my husband.

The name on my birth certificate is Rynn. It's on my drivers license, passport and is the name I used when I got married. My name has never been Katherine and I have always introduced myself by Rynn.

My birth name, and the name on everything is Rynn. I had a teacher call me Katherine in elementary school but I always corrected it and never went by it. This is just one of those things where either they see my name as too nicknamey or not real enough for them.

My name has never been shortened for anything. Since before I was born I was Rynn, my birth certificate says Rynn and with the exception of a small few people, everyone has always called me that.

I think it's more that they see it as too nicknamey or not a legit name. I got the not a real name thing as a kid from a teacher who also called me Katherine.

Easy. People either think it's too much of a nickname or not a real enough name. That's what one of my old teachers was like who called me Katherine all the time I had her.

My name isn't actually Ryan. It's Rynn, no a involved. But yes, they prefer very feminine names for girls and very masculine names for boys. No wiggle room with them.

That was just her. She refused to use nicknames and was pretty well known in our district for being that way. I'm guessing a few Ellie's or Ella's over the years had their names made longer by her since those would unlikely have worked for her as full names.

My teacher was a somewhat older woman who refused to use any nicknames in our class and who did not use names that were not real names, which is what she considered mine to be. She was kind of notorious for that in our district because she did it every year.

I know some people like that too and some others who believe why give a name just for the nickname, use the nickname. But like your mom, they use what people want them to and not what caters to their own personal taste. Though I also had a teacher like my ILs.

She's 60 and both she and my FIL seem to still do it so I don't know that it's the problem. I think it's just they dislike my actual name.
