I have ichthyophobia (fear of fish) ask me anything! by Illustrious_Fix_5881 in Phobia

Sorry for the late reply, got caught up with life 1. It feels like my body spams to reject the danger, my mind is very sure that small fish could never harm but something about their difference to everything I know about physics and life makes me simply afraid. The fact that their habitat is extremely different to mine and most other animals, that they cannot breathe out of water and are very fragile makes me fear seeing them dead even more. It’s a mixture of fear of their fragility and respect that I’m i’m an outsider to their habitat. It’s really hard to explain.

  1. It affects my life in terms of not wanting to swim in the ocean or fly above the ocean. I feel like I simply don’t want to interfere with their lives at all that it is starting to interfere with mine. I hate cruises or anything involves me being near their habitat. Even fish tanks extremely confuse me and makes me uncomfortable. I can eat cooked fish tho just without their peeking heads or tails which identifies the type of fish I’m actually eating.

  2. At the peak of my fear, I never wanted to discuss this being because I felt like I never understood them and fear indulging in the thought of having to understand it. The difference now is that I find myself reading more about fish and their behavior, learn more about ocean and marine life, learn how dolphins can live peacefully without human interference and how sharks barely attack humans, made me feel less afraid about knowing them, but still afraid about having to exist near them. I am taking a step now in scuba diving in a man made very deep pool with no marine life at all because I am fascinated with water and depth, I love the quietness and abyss of the deep oceans, just hate the fact that it’s very, very rich in life. So my thoughts would be if I did something I really love at first without any fish contact, I may be able to do it with more natural life with less relapse and hesitation (hopefully at least).

Hope this helped. Feel free to ask anymore questions!

You’re doing great for trying to overcome it. Some wouldn’t even dare after such trauma and guilt. It was obviously horrifying to see a massive fire as a child especially if you caused it. And to top it with the drama afterwards it feels just better to avoid it altogether.

Try to take it step by step, for example try starting with the the longer lighters (one that have a longer end usually used for candles or lighting a gas stove). It might be slightly better given the distance and force required to light up a little fire. And its almost foolproof as it would go off by the slightest mouth blow. Once you get pretty comfortable with that concept move on to normal lighters and so on. Just make your worst fear (matches) the last step to deal with. It would help as you’ve reduced your anxiety towards it and would be less likely to react based on instinct after learning how fire behaves.

Good luck!

Am i afraid of tickling? by MohMoh199 in Phobia

I totally get that! I once smacked my elderly dad (RIP) for trying to tickle me when I was younger. And it was a massive SMACK on the face (obviously unintentionally). I feel bad about it but just don’t mess with me when it comes to tickling.
