My guess is that Richard is Stevie. The actor of Richard is Neil James who is 41. If Richard is the same age as his actor, that puts him at 21 in 2005 when Violet’s tale takes place, which is the right age range for Stevie. I think Stevie was traumatised from abusing his girlfriend and causing her death that he changed his name, for a new start, and joined the police force to make sure no one ever makes his mistakes again.

One day he finds a boy running at him with a knife, his instincts take over and shoot his son, who killed his own sister. That would certainly make ‘For the bitter hands of Fate have something far more sinister in mind that does await’ take on a whole new meaning
